Sandra started the topic Monthly comp – July 2019 in the forum Monthly Competition 7 years, 1 month ago
‘Bringing a gun into a house
changes it.’The opening words lines of a poem entitled ‘The Gun’, written in 2001 by Vicki Feaver, whose work I discovered last year.
I’d like you to enlarge upon this by adding no more than 200 words.
And because I’m not convinced that two months makes participation any more likely, I’m setting a deadline of…[Read more]

Great idea for the competition – specially as I had an entry all ready to go and didn’t need to do any actual work…
Congrats, Sandra. I’m only glad I didn’t have to do the judging.

Works for me! And with the subtitle, too…

Great idea for the competition, Raine.
Sandra – well deserved. Absolutely intriguing start. -

Further thanks to Kate, Kaz and John. It seems I really ought to stick with my working title. So how about:
A LYTTLE GOES A LONG WAY
The extraordinary life of an Ulster StorytellerOr is it better without a subtitle?

Great idea for the competition Raine, and a lovely selection of entries. Well done Sandra – worthy winner.
I apologise for not joining in btw. I fully intended to, but as I’m between WIPs I was going to have to start something new. I had some ideas but every little spare moment was taken up with other things and at twenty to midnight when I was…[Read more]

Good heavens, Raine – what a compliment, especially in view of the strength of the rest; I certainly was torn between at least three to name as my favourite. Thank you, indeed. And you can most certainly read the rest, as soon as it’s done. (Currently ‘resting’ after finishing a first draft last week, and already knowing things need…[Read more]

Has to be “A Lyttle goes a long way.” Excellent title.

Thanks, Squidge. No, I do like the original title (You should see the length of the list of “Lyttle” puns I rejected before choosing this one! There’s already a completely unrelated book out there called “Lyttle by Lyttle”, my first thought.) I just wondered if I could grasp readers attention without using his name. Maybe I’m worrying needlessly.…[Read more]

Tony – sorry, but Unrelenting Limelight doesn’t work for me either. Sounds like a tragedy set on a stage, and it sounds like your relative’s life was far from a tragedy.
You said that if you’re not familiar with the name, why buy the book?
Book buyers are a strange crowd, drawn in by all sorts of things. Surely it’s that ‘drawing in’ of…[Read more]

OK, so I could still go with “A Lyttle goes a long way”. I agree it’s a nice pun, although any pun could put some people off, I suppose. I was hoping to avoid using his name in the title as though it is his name, alone, that makes it worth buying the book – and if it doesn’t happen to ring a bell with you, why would you buy it?
Would this revised…[Read more]

Thanks Gipps. THe working title is better, eh? Perhaps you three are right. But jaw-dropping is a strong word; thanks for that.

I really should be keeping the old writing muscles warmed up, but I’m waiting for an edit to be returned, for the publisher’s opinion of Black Ruby (my two lovely betas have pointed out the weaknesses I thought were there, so that’s good!) to come through, and it’s fast approaching the end of term here and I have a whole primary school library to…[Read more]

Thinking time maybe, Squidge?

YEah, mulling and marinading time! End of terms and holidays are always writing-time killers, aren’t they? I’m sure you’ve thought of it, but I always try to have something I can do on paper over the hols cos I’ve got a much better chance of grabbing ten minutes with pen than on computer (especially as it’s an old beast that takes 30 mins to power…[Read more]

Can’t believe how busy end of term is…
Yep, can do bits and pieces on paper, but I’m wary of putting too much effort in now if things change much further back and have an impact on later work. Such a fine balance. Doing lots of reading instead.
-
Reading is excellent @squidge. I’m not doing enough of that and feeling the lack myself. It’s such a good way of ‘filling the well’ isn’t it? Enjoy!

Thanks, Squidge, for your insightful comments. Interesting that the working title would catch your eye without even knowing about WG Lyttle. I agree the other bit wasn’t really a strapline – more part of the blurb, as you say.
Bella, I love the idea of ‘Hold the Front Page.’ Unfortunately it would be anachronistic; back then the front page was…[Read more]
