On a personal note – thank you again fellow writers for the good wishes when I first returned to the Den. I can now report that I am in remission. Hope this good news yesterday will spur me to write even more! Maybe it will as I have just submitted my December competition entry and it flowed out from somewhere inside very easily! Wishing all a…[Read more]

Nativity Mystery – A lighthearted tale
540 words excluding title
Miss Farthing sighed wearily and then screamed ‘Be quiet!’ She could stand it no longer. This was the last rehearsal of the Nativity play at Priory Primary School before the performance in front of parents and governors and it was utter chaos. Some children had swapped co…[Read more]

Congratulations, Athelstone. I look forward to your December challenge. I enjoyed the other two November fireside tales very much too. Thank you, Terrie for setting an interesting challenge, which brought out the Grandma in me, although I have grandsons not a granddaughter! Jill x

Incidentally, when I say “it’s possible” I should probably add, “but not easy.”
The ONLY method that would work consistently for a forum post would be to construct some fairly complex HTML using the code tab of your text box. You would need to do this for every post.
The situation has existed ever since the creation of WordPress and I was very…[Read more]

Apologies, paragraph indentation didn’t seem to work on this….

Answering on the activity stream to keep the comp thread clear. In general, WordPress (that this site uses) doesn’t really play with, or understand, or use paragraph indentation. It’s possible, but I haven’t looked into it yet. The issue is that WordPress was originally built for blogging (by one person) and we use almost none of that…[Read more]

Forest Adventure
Grandma lifted a pyjama clad Ellie onto her lap and they both warmed their hands by the roaring log fire for a few moments. Grandma smiled down at Ellie and asked if she was sitting comfortably. Ellie nodded and snuggled into her Grandma’s warm, plump body a little closer.
‘Then I’ll begin,’ said Grandma in the time honoured t…[Read more]

1st October 2025 and results time. Thank you Libby, Knicks and Athelstone for your beautifully written and atmospheric entries, such a pleasure to read. All worthy winners which immersed me in the diverse scenarios completely. It has been hard to choose one winner to take over the baton and set us a challenge for this new month.

Hello fellow writers. Gentle reminder of ‘New Beginnings’ challenge for September 2025! Now over half of month has passed and no entries. I do so look forward to reading your excellent writing… If you wish, the challenge could just be ‘Beginning’ or ‘The Beginning of…’ Jill x

September, start of Autumn and associated by me with new beginnings – new school or university/college; new term/school year or maybe a new job. So, the theme for September is simply ‘New Beginnings’ which you are free to interpret in any way you wish, fictional or something from your own life. An upper limit of 400 words please.

Goodness! When I was eventually allowed to log in! I came here fully expecting Janette’s entry to be declared the winner and so was surprised that I have been declared. Thank you Sandra. Yes, our paths in life do seem to have some parallels… Congratulations to Janette too, as I loved the way she told her story and the title!

Hello, Libby ~ hope all goes well with you and your writing. Thank you for your comment. I think I am lucky in that the chemo isn’t the ‘aggressive’ kind and I haven’t really had side effects, just a few niggles. True, I get a little tired but I can rest and often that is when many writing ideas occur! I also find writing is therapy. 4th Cyc…[Read more]

UNION: An account just touching upon rivalry.
This is a tale of two halves: two families from which the son of one and a daughter of the other meet, fall in love and marry, thus acquiring Mothers-in-Law and Fathers-in-Law.
This is part of my own life story and that of my husband of fifty-six years; David.
Our relationship began as a teenage…[Read more]

First read Sandra’s August comp prompt and thought not for me this time, but then found something inside thought differently and I have written an entry yet to be edited! It was enjoyable to write and I hope there will be many other entries! I do tend to ‘compose’ ate the moment early in the month at present as late in month is when chemo cycle…[Read more]

Glad to hear this Jill, I hoped it would spark a good response, with or without reading Liz Lockhead’s poem. And best wishes for chemo cycle’s successful ending.

I admire your ability to write while having the chemo treatment, Jill. I don’t think I’d be able to do that.
