I sit on the park bench under the pines whose needles clog the spaces between its wooden rungs and whose scent mingles with the faint smell of urine and of the sweet green mould that covers the wood.Children race around me, chasing after the leaves that whirl on the wind. I look for you in their faces. I look for me too. But we are not…[Read more]

“The Book of my Enemy Has Been Remaindered”
The book of my enemy has been remaindered
And I am pleased.
In vast quantities it has been remaindered
Like a van-load of counterfeit that has been seized
And sits in piles in a police warehouse,
My enemy’s much-prized effort sits in piles
In the kind of bookshop where remaindering…[Read more]-

I met Clive James once. I had long been a fan of the least known – but which he once said was ‘the closest to my heart’ – of his many endeavours, the songs he wrote with Pete Atkin and which Atkin performed. When I first got internet access I discovered and started participating in a mailing list of like-minded souls called Midnight Voices, and…[Read more]

JaneShuff started the topic Class 2 Writing Exercise Jane in the forum
Andrew Wille's DIY MA course 6 years, 6 months agoI loved this section of the course and I’ve spent quite a bit of time on the charatcer questionnaires. I find them a good way of forcing my brain to think. However I don’t think they’re very interesting for anyone else to read. Instead I’m posting something loosely based on the Distinguishing Features exercise. Would love some feedback. I know…[Read more]

Andrew Wille's DIY MA course 6 years, 6 months agoWow. That went fast!
I’m happy with the timetable you suggest @woolleybeans and equally happy if anyone with a busier Christmas than mine wants to take it even slower. I’m getting a lot out of this and don’t see any need to rush!
Thanks for staying on top of it WB

Captive No More
Immovable behind a wide table, the five children sat strangely motionless. From tallest on the right to smallest on the left, they patiently faced an audience seated on ten rows of scarlet-topped hotel ballroom chairs.
The tallest child spoke first. “My name is One,” he said quietly, but loud enough. “I am the oldest. I am…[Read more]

Andrew Wille's DIY MA course 6 years, 6 months ago@squidge I’d be interested in seeing those notes too.
I agree with you both about using the character questionnaire and other exercises at the early stages. It isn’t helpful for me. I need to write stuff and let them emerge. However at the end of first draft stage (which is where I’m at) I am finding it very useful for pinning down things about…[Read more]

Andrew Wille's DIY MA course 6 years, 6 months agoI’m glad it wasn’t just me who read the wrong bits! Some of the suggestions in this chapter are quite subtle and may be beyond my sledgehammer approach. 🙂 Was interested at the example of the waitress and how she was characterised by her actions while the customers were characterised by their looks.
I shall have to give this questionnaire some…[Read more]

Steps of passing ghosts
‘Trees are at their best when they’re turned into timber,’ said Norman as he picked the large golden leaf from his decking, crushing it in his hand. He had searched for ages to find this house with no trees in sight. There had been a spruce in the garden when he moved in, that the previous owner said had been a Chris…[Read more]

Andrew Wille's DIY MA course 6 years, 6 months agoAh another person in search of their murderer. I wrote 90% of my first draft before I identified mine!
I too found it fairly alien until recently but it works for me in a weird way, nudging my unconscious to sort problems out if that makes sense.

Andrew Wille's DIY MA course 6 years, 6 months agoI am absolutely loving doing the character questionnaires, using the characters from the splurgy and shapeless first draft of my current WIP. Like @squidge though, I am not sure if I would get so much out of doing it before I had written extensively about them. It would feel like inventing a character rather than discovering one. Has anybody tried…[Read more]

It is cold here at the end of the earth this morning! I haev had to make the cat a hot water bottle to keep her off my lap while I work.
-
Frosty here too. Cats reported cold paw complaints when I was still in bed!
-
It is now hailing and stormy. I might have to give in and put the heating up…
-
The frost was settling on the cars last night at 9pm, but the rain’s cleared it off. Now lashing it down and pretty cold here. Will have to get the stove going…

Andrew Wille's DIY MA course 6 years, 6 months agoDitto from me @katemachon . Another quote from, I think, later in the chapter is ‘There’s nothing generic about fiction’- probably misquoted as I didn’t write it down. And also from The Art of Character – ‘It’s through character that we bring the general down to earth.’I am feeling both inspired and daunted!

Andrew Wille's DIY MA course 6 years, 6 months agoI haven’t finished this chapter yet, but I’m already fascinated. Love the Sloane rule that speech ‘must do more than one thing or it is too inert for the purposes of fiction.’
And the example of the argument about sinking the oil rigs was an eye opener – to engage us emotionally in a disagreement, the characters must have an emotional stake in…[Read more]

Andrew Wille's DIY MA course 6 years, 6 months agoOr choose a character you’ve developed already and see if the character questionnaire sheds any new light. Like you, I tend to discover who they are as I write.
