Thanks so much for the link, Daeds! I have read about several interesting finds recently along the HS2 route, but I hadn’t heard about this mosaic in London. What a wonderful find, and in good condition too π

Absolutely, and if it’s an audio book I always check out the narrator’s voice too.
Very impressed by your annual haul of 200 books, wow! -

Yes, 3k words sounds ideal – I seem to recall that was the word count suggested in the days of the Cloud when work was posted for critique. So true what you said about picking up stuff on paper that might be missed on a screen.
Nowadays, I notice more errors in trad. published books than I used to, but whether that’s because there are more errors…[Read more] -

Hi @libby, to tie in with your comment about reading the first few chapters, I wonder if sampling say the first 5K words of an MS might be helpful in deciding whether to take on a beta read? I think this would be better than reading a synopsis as it would give a sense of the style of the writing while not revealing the book’s ending. As for a 200k…[Read more]

@Thea – I entirely agree with your suggestion of sampling before committing; it rarely takes long to decide ‘not for me’ with a book bought (or not bought) for pleasure; even more important if one is to give valuable feedback.

Libby and Jane have come up with some excellent questions and I can’t add much except for:
Does the writer have any specific questions? This might be something that’s crucial to whether the story works or not, e.g. Did you work out whodunit? If so, when?
Did you notice any discrepancies / inconsistencies in the story?
Were you conscious of…[Read more]

Hi @janeshuff, the only response to my beta reading request was your kind message explaining that you aren’t able to help at present. After a month or so, I deleted the request.
I agree that it would be beneficial to have a discussion about beta reading. As you said, it’s a good learning process for both reader and writer. I guess the first thing…[Read more] -

Gosh, so sorry to hear that, Janette. Wishing you a speedy recovery. Take care. x

Oh dear, oh dear. MrsB tripped on an uneven pavement and broke her arm while we were on holiday last year, and I remember all the pain and worry, so I have some idea of what you’re going through, and you have my sympathy. Especially since your case sounds worse, though reading between the lines it sounds like you’re getting better care too. Best…[Read more]

Rubbish news, Janette. I hope you recover as soon as possible. Sending more hugs – gentle ones.

Thank you, all, for your well-wishes. @richardb, sorry to hear about your wife. Care has been hit-and-miss due to an over-stretched NHS, but Mr O has taken a sabbatical from our small business and is taking good care of me. Just a pity I can’t always get to talk to relevant NHS departments when I need to.
Re Den, lets hope we can sort it out and…[Read more]

How long does it keep for?
-
I’ve no idea…hang on…according to google, it lasts about a month just sitting around doing nothing, but if you put it somewhere warm and dry so that the skin-layer of leaves goes papery, it can last for several months.

I thought you were an experienced garlic grower but I see you’re a novice like us! At least yours has grown. Ours never showed its face!

The best Iβve managed is chives.
One thing about the weather this year: the patches of meadow pea on the laneβs verges are larger than usual. Rich golden yellow flowers liked by bees.

Sorry, late as usual! Having read through the comments, I think there are lots of excellent points made and, yes, it feels like the site needs sprucing up. For example, there is always a big buzz in the autumn when the annual challenge is announced – but how to maintain that buzz? For a prospective new member, the general lack of activity must be…[Read more]
