A slightly longer version of the story I entered for last winter’s challenge, The Girl Who Came to Stay, has been longlisted in the CAS Short Story Competition, wot Daedalus alerted us to a couple of months ago. Only the longlist (and of course I have no idea how many entries there were), but since this is effectively the first recognition of any sort anything I’ve written has ever received since I had a story in the school magazine when I was eight, I am, shall we say, not displeased.

Congratulations, Richard. It’s a powerful story that deserves recognition.

I see from the website that my entry has been longlisted, too, which feels rather good. I didn’t recognise any of the other titles.

And congratulations to you too, Ath. Which story is yours? It did strike me that at least one of the titles had your ring to it, but I might have been completely off-beam so I ain’t sayin’.

My One and Only Love. That’s from the Cloud and all the way back to 2014/2015.

Congratulations to both of you. Good luck for the shortlist.

And a big “well done” to Richard, whose story has reached the shortlist. Let’s hope it does even better.

Thank you, Ath. I’ve only just this minute found out myself, and I’m still taking it in. Oh, and thanks too for your challenge, without which it would never have been written.

I’m on the shortlist too. Nice to have such excellent company. Congratulations to all.

Congratulations to you too, Kate. We may be a small group of people here on the Den, but we’re talented…

I didn’t make the shortlist but I tell myself it was obviously a moment of madness by whoever made the choice 😀

Really hope it’s a Den entry up there at the top.

Well yes, obviously. But making the longlist is quite an achievement too.

Congrats to the long and shortlistees! I’ve only just noticed that my story was on the longlist – as I’d already resigned myself to not being listed, missing out on the shortlist does not come as a blow, but I’m delighted for Richard and Kate, best of luck to both of you!

4 longlisted and 2 shortlisted. I call that impressive for a small site like this.

    Not bad at all!

That’s four Denizens now on the longlist, a 20% hit rate. Impressive. Or is anyone else going to come out of the woodwork?

Wot I said to Ath, Daeds: making the longlist is an achievement, so congrats on that.

Ah. Forgot to check for new posts (not often necessary here, sad to say), hence the duplication with Ath’s post.

Is that yours in second place, Richard!! Huge congratulations.

Thank you, Kate. Yes, it is. Once again I seem to have missed the boat to be the first to announce it, but hey, who cares? After writing and submitting two novels and getting 60% form rejections and 40% no reply at all, it does feel rather good to have got some validation at last.

Bitter, moi? Not just at the moment.

    Brilliant news, Richard! Many congratulations.

    And Kate too. Really good.

So please, Richard. A brilliant and moving story, written with an intensity but also a subtlety that really marks it out.

Brilliant news Richard – a fantastic story that absolutely deserves the recognition, and that goes for the writer too

Thank you one and all. I’ve had a good feeling about this story ever since I knocked out the original version for last winter’s challenge in three days flat, but never in my wildest dreams did I envision it would do this well. Well, in my wildest dreams maybe, but not anywhere else.

The result has bolstered my faith in my writing ability, though not in my chances of being published. As most (all?) of us know by now, the quality of your writing is far from being the only factor in that. Do we think it will sell in the current market? Does this author make good copy we can promote? Et cetera. This competition was judged blind, so my writing was able to speak for itself without all that other stuff interfering. That’s actually a rather good feeling.

And quite right it is too!

Am I right in supposing that at least three of the four listed stories from Denizens were from Den or Cloud winter challenges? (Mine was from the 2016-17 challenge, which iirc was the penultimate one to be wholly staged on the Cloud)

    I think you’re right.

There’s another challenge brewing. Should be up in a week or so.

Oh, yes, 2016/17 was the penultimate one wholly on the Cloud (Alan’s last challenge: Now and Then). Was yours Craquelure, a rather unnerving and powerful story about a painting?

Kate’s was from 2017/18 (My first Challenge: Whispers and Glances)

Mine was from 2014/15 (can anybody remember all the theme names on the Cloud? I know some)

    2014-15 – Here and There

2015-16 – Not in Kansas Any More

    2016-17 – Now and Then

    2017-18 – Whispers and Glances

    2018-19 – A Room with a View

Those were the ones I took part in. I think there may have been one or two before I joined the Cloud, one of them called Intercity.

And yes, my story was Craquelure, the one about Landseer’s Man Proposes, God Disposes

I did the same with this reply as so often before: typed it, went to check something, got distracted, forgot all about it, closed the laptop, assumed I’d sent it.

    Mark 2.

Thanks @daedalus. I find that I remebered more than I thought, although We’reNot in Kansas Any More had eluded me for a bit. The two earlier ones were first, the Intercity Challenge and second, the Jobcentre. I joined the Cloud just prior to the Intercity but I wasn’t familiar enough with what was going on to enter. My entry to the Jobcentre found its way into the first Stories for Homes, the anthology for Shelter that Sally Swingewood and Debi Alper edited.
