JillParticipantI have mainly been a half glass full person for all of my lengthy years on this planet, although there have naturally been exceptions otherwise I would not be human. As cancer has struck for a second time in 35 years, I am finding positivity in attitude that the outcome of this treatable, if not curable form is going to be the good prognosis expected is carrying me through admirably alongside love and support and excellent medics. My sense of humour remains too!
So I am wondering whether any Denizen has a story to tell about positivity of attitude being greatly beneficial or any thoughts whatsoever on this subject… 🌈🌞🌈

AthelstoneModeratorJill, it’s so good to hear from you again, in spite of what you’ve been, and are, going through.
I think any response that isn’t on a level with your own experience of positivity is likely to sound trivial, or at least less significant. But it is a fascinating topic. It’s often said that realists have a less positive expectation of outcome, but the truth is that if we don’t set out at least trying to hit the gold, we so often don’t achieve. This is a writing site. We are about writing, and that’s a leap of faith if ever there was one. I think that on the day I set out telling myself that I won’t get there, then I probably won’t. On the days that I write on, regardless, or with confidence, then I probably will. What’s more, if I can keep an eye on my attitude and make myself adopt a more positive approach, then more than half the time that works.
It’s not a matter of life and death, but it is a matter of happiness.

JillParticipantAthelstone ~ You have sent tingles through me by your kind words and considered and intelligent comments. I well remember all of your contributions of similar ilk. Thank you. There is so much to this subject and I may add more sometime later, but it is a lovely Sunday morning and not too hot as yet and so I will carry on at a gentle pace with what I was doing in the garden before I came in to check my emails. 😊🌈🌞🌈😇

JillParticipantHappened upon a little book of quotes on my heaving bookshelf 😊
William James (? Do not know of him) considers that “There is but one cause of human failure and that is man’s lack of faith in his true Self.”
Eileen Caddy in The Dawn of Change says “A soul without a high aim is like a ship without a rudder.”
This I think mirrors one of Athelstone’s comments on positivity?
Finally, Ursula Le Guin counsels in The Left Hand of Darkness that “It is good to have an end to journey towards, but it is the journey that matters, in the end.”
Thoughts to ponder… In a positive way?

JillParticipantLooked up William James and found he was an American Philosopher and Psychologist.

AthelstoneModeratorWilliam James seems like an interesting man. He’s an example of something less common these days, a polymath. He studied widely across medicine and philosophy, developing expertise in both fields so that he taught physiology, psychology and philosophy (at different times) at Harvard, whilest finding time for an apprenticeship as a painter, and learning French and German along the way.

JillParticipantYes, Athelstone I read all about him on Wikipedia and he was a very interesting and talented, intelligent man. Also related to the Henry James’s.
Hope your day and writing going well. Jill 😊

JillParticipantI began this blog by citing how Positivity is helping me at the present time and now I would like to explain why I believe and sincerely hope that it is helping my immune system be as strong as it can be in the light of the fact that chemo does temporarily compromise the immune system.
The physiology of positivity is interesting. I quote from an article read online as it explains the phenomenon well I think.
”The physiology of positivity encompasses the biological and physical changes in the body associated with positive emotions and thoughts. These changes involve the nervous system, endocrine system and immune system leading to various health benefits.”
The article goes on to detail more fully the physiological aspects of positivity, but it is the immune system that is my subject here. “Studies suggest that positive emotions can have a positive impact on the immune system, potentially leading to better immune function and reduced risk of illness…
…They may also contribute to faster recovery from illness or injury.”
I believe positive thoughts/emotions would have been a more apt description here.
Of course there is much more to this subject than quoted here and I find it fascinating. It has come to the forefront of my mind this week as I was reminded that in India the July full moon is special and linked to honouring those who instil positivity into others, such as parents (if one is fortunate) or gurus.
The July full moon was on Thursday night and is therefore now waning, but I am still enjoying its beauty and the feeling of serenity each night.

JillParticipantOn another personal note regarding positivity, (forgive me) my consultant had
good news this week as a scan had shown that the treatment is doing its job. He and we are delighted and he agreed that positivity helps the body help itself so to speak. Thank you for the previous good wishes from Denizens. Jill x
