Jane, I’m the opposite as my first draft is very sparse and I need to work out what needs more and what’s fine as it is, plus working out if the story is strong enough which is probably my biggest worry. It’s gloomy here too. Hibernation weather! I’ve not seen Little Women. In two minds about watching yet another remake but it seems to be getting…[Read more]

Hi Richard! It’s lovely to see all your familiar faces popping up. I wasn’t looking at joining in this time, just checking it was still going. Good to hear it is 👍👍

I am currently trying to turn a sprawling first draft into something with a bit of shape and trying not to notice all the other things that need doing to it!
We actually had some sun yesterday – I’d forgotten what it looked like – but woke up this morning to wind and rain. It feels like this has been the gloomiest winter for a long time.
I went…[Read more]

Hello! I have a first draft that needs some work doing. Tentatively opened it the other day after a bit of a break. Found a massive continuity error in the first two chapters! Ah well. I need to get stuck into some serious rewriting now. How about you?

Hello you lovely Denizens!
When I “took a break” from the Den back in 2018 to focus on book related stuff I didn’t mean the break to be as long as it has been but 2019 turned into an absolute stinker. However we made it through and while I thought I’d let myself off any New Year’s Resolutions this year I did keep coming back to one that felt…[Read more]

Wow, Sea, this is hard-hitting and not a word wasted. Superb.

Andrew Wille's DIY MA course 6 years, 5 months agoTwo fabulously disconcerting letters, Bella. The first one couched in the appropriately formal language of a teacher to a pupil but revealing a wholly inappropriate relationship and posing a lot of questions. The more I read it the more I began to think that Maximilian was the one pulling the strings and Waltraut was trying to escape him.

A not-so-idle threat
Even though she knew looking left and right as she opened the discreet dark green door was a dead giveaway for anyone watching, she couldn’t stop herself. Crowds and dazzling Christmas lights made it harder to spot a spy, but surely, after five days at Ivo’s cottage they’d’ve given up by now. Wouldn’t they? The low-level…[Read more]

The Future
“The future is the time we haven’t had yet,” he said, “simple as that.”
“That may be what the future is but not what it holds,” she responded, “not what’s in store, where it might take us.” Then she got up from the picnic table outside The Black Bull and walked off.He thought about that last exchange…[Read more]

MAY I remind all participants in the Songs of Innocence & Experience challenge that there are only three weeks remaining in which to complete and submit an entry. Thank you.
-
And only five entries so far? What’s happening to us?
-
I don’t think mine’s going to happen. Sorry.
-
I’ve struggled this year. Too many other things happening but I have the beginnings of an idea and will do my best to get it to the finishing line even if it’s a bit rough.
-
Mine’s definitely not going to happen I’m afraid. The two months up to Christmas were very slow for writing and I had to prioritise the novel WIP.
Have drafted a monthly comp entry which I’ll post soon to assuage some of my guilt and disappointment.-
I’m going to have to hold up my hands in defeat. I’ve got two thirds of a very rough first draft and defintiely not enough time to produce anything readable although I am pleased I had a go because it has possibilities. I’ll carry on working on it in between all the other things and maybe post it some other time. I’d love to stay part of the group…[Read more]

All members stay members – unless they actually choose to drop out – and I’d be sorry to see anybody choose to leave. We can’t always do everything we’d like too and the group challenge is for enjoyment, not pain! Sad you didn’t get there, but you mustn’t fret about it.

If anyone’s interested – States of Independence, at De Montfort Uni in Leicester on the 21st March. Free event: talks, stalls, publishers etc, and Benjamin Zephaniah is one of the speakers! Hoping to go and have a stall so I can sell some books…

Andrew Wille's DIY MA course 6 years, 5 months agoHi @Squidge. I didn’t always think her examples showed what I thought she was talking about but as I read the chapter while travelling yesterday was going to reread some of them to have a second look. The one about the burying something in the garden springs to mind.
