Libby started the topic Short stories, flash and micro-fiction in the forum
Beta Reading 4 years, 3 months agoI’m very happy to beta read short stories, flash and micro-fiction.
I generally print out anything longer than a couple of pages as my reading skills engage better with hard copy.ย Therefore if you send me your work please number the pages. Thank you!

The Mooring (325 words)
The two sisters were in their twenties. They stood on the kyleโs shore in their Puffa jackets and looked at a small yacht moored to a buoy, hatches closed. The yacht floated as calmly as a swan.
Although the sisters were dressed in similar clothes their personalities were opposites.
โThey were lucky,โ said Lena, about…[Read more]

Have you seen this @thea? https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2022/feb/22/lavish-roman-mosaic-is-biggest-found-in-london-for-50-years
-
Thanks so much for the link, Daeds! I have read about several interesting finds recently along the HS2 route, but I hadn’t heard about this mosaic in London. What a wonderful find, and in good condition too ๐
-
No problem. I was astonished that there’s still stuff like that left to find!
-
Yes, there have been amazing finds. They certainly built stuff to last ๐

Well done Raine and thank you Knicks. Iโd forgotten how much fun it is writing these short skits.

Warning: Dark humour.
SEIZING THE MOMENT
โTwenty-five years we were married,โ I tell the young police officer as he hands me a cup of tea with shaking hands.
โIโm very sorry for your loss,โ he murmurs, gaze resting anywhere but on me.
I suppose I should wash and change, but Iโm feeling a bit odd right now.
And it will take more than a wash…[Read more] -

I’ll try and give my brain a rattle and join in too. It’s been a while since I’ve done one of these comps, but I’ve found them a great learning device in the past.

Are there any books/authors you’re particularly looking forward to reading this year? I’m pleased Alan Garner has published a new novel, Treacle Walker, which I haven’t read yet. At his age one can’t help wonder how much more he will write, so a new book is especially welcome.

I’d like to try an entry this month if you set a comp, Knicks. I’ve been away from writing for over two months and am very rusty but, selfishly speaking, it would be a good way to get back into it. I’m not going to be able to manage the annual Den challenge this time around, having spent too much time with all this surgery stuff, so the monthly…[Read more]

Recovering from Covid. It’s no joke. Be careful out there people, the risk is real
-
Sorry to hear you caught it. Did it break through jabs? Hope you recover quickly and fully x
-
Take care of yourself and take time to recover.
-
Thanks. Difficult with all the work I have on, unfortunately
-
-
Yes, double jabbed, last one in July.
-
-
Ugh Daeds, as if you needed an extra thing to deal with now. Hope it doesn’t linger & hope you are able to treat yourself gently & get extensions if needed. x

One of my instant thoughts was teeth dropping out! But like you, Squidge, I’ll set that one aside. Though perhaps there’s horror story material there…

Country ways are a mixed blessing.
Environmental news is generally so depressing that it’s a relief to have some good news with which to start the week. Seal numbers in the Thames estuary continue to increase – a news piece in the Guardian. If the link below doesn’t work, the item is currently on the website’s front…[Read more]
