I love to plan. That’s why nothing ever gets written.

Honestly, I’m sorry this has taken me so long…
All the entries left me wishing I’d given you more words to play with since each of them teased with hidden depths.
Ath – so easy to read (as ever!) Engaging, apparently effortless writing, but so many questions! Who was this man? Where did he come from and where would he end up? More importan…[Read more]

Sorry! I haven’t forgotten, just waiting for a break in the clouds.
If I don’t have time tonight, then results will definitely be posted tomorrow when I’m off.
Thank you for your patience. -

Skulduggery Pleasant also has murder. In fact, if Amazon is anything to go by, there’s loads of murder out there.

Thanks for that. Yes, my view was that it should be fine, but it does seem that the publishing world imposes rules for children’s books these days. I don’t want to get into a debate on the merits of these, but it’s important to know them as an author, if only to stop wasting time writing stuff that will never be published. In this particular case…[Read more]

Teabreak? Not what I was expecting to hear. Even more fabulous! 🙂

Thank you 🙂
Working title is “Thirty days”. Teabreak goes to a new town and finds his memories and experiences are broken. Is it a past life? Is it his current life? Mystery, romance, murder, and disastrous incompetence await him.-

It wasn’t orginally his story (a few years ago) but I was getting nowhere after 12,000 words, so I asked him if he’d mind it being about him. He generously stepped in as the MC and I began to enjoy it.

Congrats, Ath. The pitch sounds good too.

I’ve had a few challenges of late, not least because, for some reason known only to the gods of dubious decisions, I chose to do my Return to Nursing Practice while still working full-time for City of Edinburgh Council. I had some fool notion that I could utilise prior skills to help out during the recruitment crisis but ultimately discovered…[Read more]

Thank you for the prompt, Terrie, which served to oil those mental cogs I was beginning to think had seized.
@Ath and Sandra – both great stories 🙂 and I hope you’ll be equally inspired by April’s comp.

As I drove home on Wednesday morning after a nightshift, I had the most amazing idea for the monthly comp. A sort of fantasy, supernatural, sci-fi thing that I was excited to start working on. I got home, made myself a cup of tea and promptly fell asleep on the sofa. By the time I woke, the idea was long gone, picked up and carried away – like s…[Read more]

Sorry, J. I have the visuals – i.e. can picture in my mind what I want to say, but it appears I have lost the ability to string words together on a page.

Alex – I know exactly what it’s like to have life throw a spanner in the works, so no apologies necessary.
Ath – Oh wow! Stalking Leviathan seems so long ago… *dashes off to recharge the Kindle so I can check which story you mean*

I confess to not having written much these past few months and my writerly fixes are, for the most part, coming through my involvement with the Den. When I set this prompt, I think I knew it might be tricky – time-consuming, too – but I’m afraid I allowed the need to give my own writing a bit of a shake to get in the way of my common sense…[Read more]

Apologies for being late back to this and thanks to everyone who entered (as well as those who didn’t enter but found the prompt useful). I’ll get onto the business of judging later today and post results by this evening ☺️

I’ve just started listening to Ken Follett on BBC Maestro, and this is (sort of) taken from a task he sets at the end of the section on developing ideas.
Take a scene in a book (your own or someone else’s) where not a lot is happening. Find five ways to improve it e.g identify things that could go wrong, complicate matters or raise the sta…[Read more]

Oh, crikey! This has caught me on the hop. Such a great catch of entries!
Squidge – thanks for the prompts. I wasn’t convinced I’d be able to do them justice.
Libby, Sandra, Janette and Alex – there wasn’t a single story I wouldn’t have picked to be a winner ????

UNTITLED (300 words)
Betty Hoskins – aged 95 years – and probably a pipe smoker for the last 85 of them. She’s at the allotments, perched on a ragged, weather-beaten wicker armchair beneath an arch of bamboo rods and green netting, enveloped in a haze of what she calls her ‘medicinal’ blend.
It’s late evening, the sun is bedding down behi…[Read more]
