@janeshuff, my book is full of varied ethnicity because of the region I’ve set it in. To help, I have gone with what I know. First, I looked at who I knew personally, who might help me factually. Secondly, people I know or have known more remotely, have inspired other characters and I took notes of what I remembered about them. In addition, I s…[Read more]

Great that the experience ended up as a positive one, Raine.

I daren’t book anything until I’m given a clean bill of health, which may be too late for this one. Hope you both get the recognition you deserve there x

Oh, ffs, what a time for technology to have a hissy fit! That’s awful, Raine, and I feel your frustration … but hopefully (surely) the agent will too. Here’s to the feedback being of the positive kind x

The scooter went very well, thanks, @squidge. I couldn’t have done York without it (and the help of our friend group, who were awesome). Debi created a messenger group to help us communicate (and so that I could call out for help when needed), which was a brilliant idea and worked so well, I think it should be repeated, injuries or not, next year.…[Read more]

I promise to try harder for this one. The last lies somewhere among other penned ideas, in one of my jotters.

The cell was as dark as it was damp, and it would reek all the worse but for the bitter cold. There were others in here, though Robin could not count them, in his head or by his fingers, which he could not see when placed in front of his face. The brief light that had the poor wretches holding their hands to theirs, told him there had to be ten or…[Read more]

Congratulations, Kate, John and Seagreen. And thank you, Sandra, for an excellent competition that compelled me to return to entering. I didn’t envy your task of decision making.

Oh no, Athers, I’d seen that one or two might have been cancelled and it sucks that one was ‘the one’ of yours. I haven’t heard anything, so presume mine are okay, but that doesn’t help you. Nor does having to pick from the remaining places available so late in the day. I really hope you get something out of coming to York and as mentioned above,…[Read more]

Look forward to that, Janette!

The same thing happened to me, Ath. The replacement agent I’ve found I don’t know at all, but she looks quite interesting.
-
I had something of a false start with my WIP. After getting 40K plus into it, I’ve restarted with a new MC (wildly different character) and a change from past to present tense. The net result is that I’m way behind where I intended to be for York. I’ve decided that if I can’t get an agent who’s a good match then I’ll try a book doctor.
-
I know all about changing tense, having changed a whole novel from first person present to third person past (and still not getting it published). One possibility at york is to go for an editor. I had a brilliant session with a commissioning editor: I didn’t expect or get a deal, but she helped me pick out underlying themes in the book. One of the…[Read more]

It is a strange feeling, Squidge, which for me felt as though time had played a trick on me. It played stranger tricks when my granddaughter fledged, but suddenly you will wonder how you fit everything in. Athers is right, the holes are soon filled and the relationships blossom, or should I say metamorphose into something quite different and…[Read more]

Congratulations, Sandra. I’m so glad you got there in the end. This always did sound an intriguing plot.

Jane, I had so many battles with my kids, I was exasperated, specially as my girl had double-thickness hair. This doesn’t help to get rid (they must have moved on a time-or-three since I did battle), but I have heard that once they are gone, using a serum on the hair makes it more difficult for eggs to adhere to it. Never tried it out (no serum…[Read more]

Not of the same calibre as some, I gladly concede (don’t envy the judge!), but this proved to be a great exercise to get the ‘fresh writing’ juices flowing – thanks, Sandra.
Bringing a gun into the house changes it all, doesn’t it? As soon as she caught sight of Daddy’s new addition, taking pride of place in his shiny cabinet, Annie dem…[Read more]

I second that, Sandra. Struggling to get started on next WIP, so might try and come up with something this time.

Mine just stomped out because I didn’t stop typing, which didn’t have anything to do with I want to get in with my WIP while interest is still being shown. No, it was ignorance.
