Brilliant! Let me know about the P&P and I’ll send you a cheque. If it’s hideously expensive to send to France, I’ll get it sent to my sister, or one of the sons…

PS Bought myself a range of nit and head louse treatments and am doing a different one everyday plus washing everything I’ve been in contact with everyday. I can’t bear the thought of giving them to him…

Oh, bless you! All I can say is that from experience in school (we were lucky – yes, we had nits at times, but managed to get on top of them pretty quickly by just wet-combing with a nit comb) if they keep coming back, there’s a source somewhere that you’re coming into regular contact with. In our case, a girl in the class who…shall we say that…[Read more]

Squidge – noooooo. Not in a beard. I can’t bear it!
Jane – hope your sterling efforts keep the blighters at bay.-
My Dad hasn’t started scratching yet!

An excellent point about the source, Squidge … but a beard? Ugh!!!

I am now at my Dad’s looking after him for a week. I am trying to write a bit and I do have the time but other things tend to crowd into my head. Mainly how happy I am to have this time with him while he still knows me and how lovely my OH is with him. I’m sitting here supposedly writing the villain revelation scene of my WIP but I can’t help…[Read more]

I so need help! What can I buy in the UK to get rid of nits? Can anyone help? Anyone with school age children? I would like to say I was asking for a friend but I might be lying!
-
Something like Full Marks from Tesco medicine shelves (or any big supermarket or Chemist) or ask in a chemist for what they recommend. Or if you want to avoid chemicals, use a lot of conditioner (really – a lot) and work it in well. Leave for at least 15 minutes and comb out with a fine-tooth nit-comb (that you can also buy at a chemist)
-
Thanks Ath. What I need is chemicals! I have tried everything else. We are off to the UK to look after my dad for a week and I absolutely cannot give him head lice. They have just come back again and I cannot buy anything effective (with chemicals) unless I have a prescription.
-
We fought about 3 major battles when our kids were little. The proprietary treatments you can get in a chemist or supermarket worked then and I’m sure they will now. I seem to remember Lyclear is what we used. The lotions are a real pain to use, but I think the Lyclear shampoo was easier. Ordinary washing isn’t much use; apparently they actually…[Read more]

Sorry, I should have said, I cannot buy anything strong IN FRANCE without a prescription. I’ll be at the chemists first thing tomorrow morning then, whispering furtively over the counter.
-
Jane, I had so many battles with my kids, I was exasperated, specially as my girl had double-thickness hair. This doesn’t help to get rid (they must have moved on a time-or-three since I did battle), but I have heard that once they are gone, using a serum on the hair makes it more difficult for eggs to adhere to it. Never tried it out (no serum…[Read more]

My daughter is a hairdresser and has recommended going to a chemist for products that give best results and to diligently follow the instructions on the back of the bottle. We used a tea tree shampoo when she was a child, which was effective with one of the fine nit combs when the hair is wet (after shampoo).
All bedding and clothing that has…[Read more]

Thanks both. They are tenacious b******s. This is the second time they have come back so your daughters recommendations are not falling on deaf ears, GippsGirl. I am on the ferry at the moment and will be first in the queue at the chemists tomorrow morning. Luckily my OH is fairly bald but I will be making him have a precautionary treatment as well.

You’re welcome! Hope you manage to get it resolved.

Bringing a gun into a house changes it.
It doesn’t matter that it’s locked away, out of sight. There’s something tangible – a weight, a tension – that comes with the knowledge of its presence, which terrifies me more than him.
He explained the gun’s for protection.
What extra protection could he need? He has his expression, his speech…his…[Read more]

Bringing a gun into the house changes it
Baz got the letter on his fourteenth birthday; he was now old enough to get a gun from the government store, so he finished hoeing the weeds among the vegetables and went to get it. His mother wept a little and his sisters picked the peas and looked sombre.
Nothing much changed at first. He kept the gun…[Read more]

Bringing a gun into a house changes it. You can’t help it, of course. The trick is not letting on to everyone else that you’ve changed it. Keeping everything looking exactly the same, so all the neighbours, passersby, any visitors have no idea what you’ve done.
It’s a specific kind of visitor we have in mind. The kind that bulldozes in mob-han…[Read more]
