Jonathan, I don’t want to write more detail of exactly where and how many times they hit her and how much it hurts (or doesn’t) mainly because I don’t think it advances the scene and would therefore be gratuitous. I’ve tried, now, to write enough for the reader to understand that it was horrifying, callous and caused life-threatening damage (which…[Read more]

Thriller/Psychological thriller, Anna. If you have any suggestions of books where you think the violence is done well, I’d be interested!

Kate, I think I am may have let my decision to keep the violence short stop the scene from developing in other ways so I’ve been working on that but I can see, nevertheless, that the violence has been threatened for a long time and I’ve ramped up the tension and fear leading up to it and maybe that is why it seems a let down.

I am struggling with editing a couple of violent scenes in my WIP. They need to be there. My preference is to keep them short and allusive (spelling?) and leave the reader’s imagination to do the work but a couple of beta readers have felt cheated. I’d post them but they make no sense out of context. Any advice?

@Stevie – definitely sounds worth a shot
@alanr – no idea but thought it might warrant further exploration (and we may even have some US based people here anyway)

Agent Samantha Wekstein has announced she is reopening to queries and wants to see ‘books in which girls or women burn the patriarchy to the ground’
On Monday I open to queries again. And I'd like to see some books in which girls or women burn the patriarchy to the ground. #MSWL

I’m in Loughborough – I wouldn’t call it quaint or pretty…like any town, there are bits like that, but not in the town centre. I suppose it depends on where most of the action happens…
Not sure where you’re based, Philippa, but happy to show you round if you want to see it!

Thanks John. Mostly I meant that you make us feel what it was like so well, the few places where you just tell us something directly stood out – e.g. ‘but the loss of his attendance bonus would have been intolerable’ – I would have preferred a sense of what intolerable meant to them. But it’s a seriously picky point for such a short word count…[Read more]

I just amended the post to tag people, which I’d forgotten to do before. I hope people get notifications of tags when it’s an edited post? Oh well, we’ll find out

So…I live in an East Midlands town. With a university, a canal, a market, wealthy hillside houses, poorer terraces town centre and large housing estates springing up on the outskirts. So if you need to run any specifics past anyone, let me know!
But…for a story of abduction and return, perhaps it doesn’t matter which of the settings you pick.…[Read more]

On the former Word Cloud forum, there was a monthly competition. This was not a prestigious affair, but it was a way of helping members improve their writing or just have a bit of fun. It was a genuine community affair as, initiated by a member with the delightful name ‘Wrathnar the Unreasonable’, the competition was set and judged by members. The…[Read more]

That seems short-sighted, to put it mildly! It’s good practice for any personnel in public-facing roles to have some kind of conflict resolution training, IMO. I’ve had a quick look online and found some courses (no idea how good they are, I’m afraid) that are as little as two hours and as inexpensive as £25 per person. You’re doing the right…[Read more]
