@kazg I haven’t seen an invite from you. Fabulous @jillybean

    • KazG replied 7 years ago

@janeshuff I can’t find you! There doesn’t seem to be a Janeshuff coming up. Other Janes, but not you 🙁 Might you come up under another name? Ditto for @daedalus and @jillybean

      • Try under my e mail address. I will send it again if you gaven’t got it. Or what is your name?

        • KazG replied 7 years ago

Nope to the email address. Have you signed up for the Camp? I think you have to sign up specifically for it first – it won’t find you from the old Nano site (which I think is why I can’t find @daedalus and @jillybean at the moment). It’s a private cabin so you won’t see it @janeshuff – if you make it public they fill it for you and I don’t…[Read more]

Ok I have just seen this on the Camp NaNo website:

‘Once in your cabin, you can invite your friends by typing their usernames into the invitation field. You can invite up to 19 Campers. A Camper must have created a profile, a novel, and deselected “I don’t want cabin invitations this session” to be eligible.’

So there you are – you need to be si…[Read more]

(Also you have to select, “I don’t want to be included in a cabin” so you are not sorted into a random cabin)

      • Jules replied 7 years ago

No invite thus far, Kaz. My NaNo handle is ThrowingCopper. (You did invite me right? Because someone else had already nabbed the name Jillybean 😉)

        • KazG replied 7 years ago

Aha! Got you 🙂 and yes I did invite Jillybean so I’d better go and uninvite them, if I can…

Should be called Janeshuff. Sorry @kazg I will reply in more detail later. Right up against it with a client who wants something translated into beautiful French in two hours before she gets onto a plane… Beautiful French is not my thing, so need to get it done fast enough to find someone to check it.

Good luck both of you! April = school hols so it’s a no go for me, sadly, as a kick up the arse would be useful. But I’ll be here with the pompoms. And I’m keeping any spare fingers crossed for you @kazg the waiting must be hell, but I have high hopes if not for this editor then definitely for the wider sub.

  • JaneShuff posted a new activity comment 7 years ago

If I manage to get enough planning done (not looking good at the moment but am pants at planning) I will join you @kazg. In fact I’ll go and join anyway…

    • Done it – how can I join you? Have you set up a private cabin?

Hooray for you @janeshuff! But I’m not sure about the cabin thing – i’ll go and have a look…

        Thanks @raine!

        • KazG replied 7 years ago

@janeshuff what are you calling yourself over there? I’ve set up a private cabin called Mini Den and want to invite you 🙂

Thanks guys, I really appreciate it. The scones and tea are delicious.
“Exhausting” “painfully high sheen”. I think you’ve got it, @kazg!

  • Oh, thanks for sharing @kazg!

I just put this note up on the December SloMo section, because the forums were empty for it so it looked like there was no one here!

  • Hopefully it might work for me @kazg. Especially if I don’t have to start until April.

Thanks @philippaeast about the activity thread post! @kazg – sounds like you are on a real rollercoaster, just hang on and fingers crossed about that new editor.

  • WoW, @kazg, what comprehensive notes! These days, I love this story structure stuff. I’ve recently read “Into The Woods” by John Yorke. In one chapter, he compares lots of the different models of story structure, to show how they are all effectively trying to describe the same thing, just in slightly different ways. The trick (I think) is just…[Read more]

Congratulations to all three of you. Lovely to hear what everybody’s up to. Excellent work @philippaeast and @kazg! Histfic novellas @daedalus – tell more! I’ve been bumbling around in the dark. Trying to find my next novel, working on short stories and feeling fairly down – the result of going into 2018 with such high hopes and having them all…[Read more]

Oh wow! Huge credit to you, @kazg for staying so steady as you work through this and absorb that editorial feedback. I think your strategy is a good one – get your vision down first, then step back and review. Really good luck!

I know what you mean about momentum @kazg. Once lost it can take a while to get back on track.

  • Raine posted a new activity comment 7 years, 4 months ago

Well done @kazg on keeping that word count going. 10k in the run up to xmas is a pretty impressive feat!! And I think your plan makes sense – write the thing first, then see how overall structure might work across the novels. Saves having to be thinking ont he large scale whilst trying to write. So what are you focussing on atm? Drafting #2 or editing #1?

    • Thanks @raine 😊 finishing book 2 is my focus. I have to keep some momentum up or that book world will feel cold, if you know what I mean. Also it might affect book 1 edits once I know what happens next!

    Thanks @kazg.

Oh good for you @kazg. I am glad it’s helping you conquer the fear. Driving with headlights, yes! (Ug). Chipping away, exactly, and I’m so pleased you feel “rested but engaged”. NaNo really is crazy… I have never done it. I fear I’d lose my mind!!

    • I love that analogy – I will think of that as I plough through each slow chapter!! I’m driving in pretty dense fog at the moment, but there are cats’ eyes. And actual cats on my desk, obv. Well dones for sticking to your targets – that’s bolstering & will hopefully keep you moving.

Nice post, @kazg, and one that resonates with me. I’ve always worked by chipping away, little by little. I don’t set myself targets, and I try not to think about how far I still have to go, in case I get discouraged, something I’m far too prone to. The night driving analogy puts it in a nutshell. Surprising how those few metres at a time mount up.…[Read more]

    • Thanks @richardb 🙂 And yes, there is so much truth in that ‘one step at a time’ adage. Really it’s the only way anything ever happens, regardless of the pace. One little task at a time. Congrats on finishing the rewrite, and enjoy the read! Always an exciting point 🙂

      • It is a good analogy. Another one someone gave me during my MA was ‘you’re looking at the whole mountain and you just need to look at the next rock’

        • Congratulations Richard. I hope you are taking a moment to pat yourself on the back.

          • Yay for finishing the edit, @richardb! That’s fantastic. Hope the read through goes ok. HOw do you do this bit? On paper or screen? My final read is on my kindle as it looks totally different compared to paper or laptop – so I spot things I didn’t before. But earlier not-strictly-editing reads are mostly from laptop.

            • I do it on my kindle, for exactly the reasons you state, @raine . But I like to do it sitting by my computer, so I can make the changes as soon as I spot the need to. Speaking of which, I still stick with a desktop for the actual writing because I like to have a ‘proper’ full-size keyboard. My daughter gave me a rather upmarket keyboard…[Read more]

            • @richardb, I used to sit on the sofa with my laptop and lots of cushions, but I finally set up a desk, so now have the laptop on one of those stands that lift the screen, and a proper keyboard attached. Best of both worlds, and I’ve been surprised (horrified) by how much it’s improved my concentration. :-O I read my wip-on-kindle in bed! Just…[Read more]

Thanks @kazg. Luckily we are far from the mayhem of Paris and the gilets jaunes here were peacable enough. However they’ve started blockading the Port du Commerce which means no petrol deliveries and there was a spate of panic buying over the weekend which means the pumps have run dry!

    • Oh yikes! Hope the blockade lifts soon, although I have to admire their protest power! Good luck for the writing today – and without the OH to interrupt!

    • Oh no, hope you don’t get stuck! yes, the French know how to get protesting, don’t they? Phlegmatic they are not. Good luck with the writing @janeshuff

    Thanks @philippaeast @Daedalus @kazg @anna @hilary

I’m inclined to go for the finish and edit as by the time the course starts in January, I (should?) have made a start on another novel. I think not the pitching course, as I feel atm I’ve had my fill of cover letters and synopses.
    Has anyone done these courses?

  • @kazg, thanks so much for that link.

And you’ve expressed above so beautifully my exact thoughts on story structure – including the necessity of balancing all our technical knowledge with room for the subconscious to speak.
