I know what you mean, Jill, about being glad the cogs are moving even if slowly. I find the whole writing process, and actually the reading one too, is an acceleration of thinking processes followed by a deceleration, often to a dead halt, and then getting going again slowly like an old steam train. And that’s without a pandemic.

Re swallows, from the British Trust for Ornithology’s migration blog for this week:
‘The cold weather and northerly winds from the last week will likely to have caused a bit of a bottleneck for those species migrating northwards across Europe but with a change in wind direction and an improvement in day time temperatures, 17 degrees is possible…[Read more] -

Congratulations, Raine. Your story has made me shiver with anxiety! Well done – fabulous writing.
Thank you John for setting the competition. I’m sorry March passed me by in a blur, what with one thing and another, and I didn’t manage an entry.

I really enjoyed these stories. Each one had a compelling premise, good narrative drive and strong writing. All were serious contenders. In these circumstances picking a winning comes down, in part at least, to personal preferences.
I’ve added a few editorial points in my comments in the hope these are useful if you’re going to be developing the…[Read more]

Dear All,
A reminder for would-be or thinking-about-it monthly comp entrants that we’re six days from the end of the month on 29th February.
-
Just got a bit of uncrapping to do, @libby to mine.
-
I have a lot of uncrapping to do. Hopefully I’ll get it to a postable standard in time.
-
I’ve completely failed to uncrap but posted anyway otherwise I’d forget! 😬

I just posted something which seems to have disappeared. Probably my error.
In brief, I liked this Literary Friction podcast about how we judge people by what they read.

A brief reminder for potential participants that we’re half way through the month. Though as it’s a leap year we do get an extra day.

An author’s hypocrisy, offensiveness, crassness or general liverish misanthropy doesn’t normally put me off reading them. It depends what the benefits might be. Good writing, insights I might otherwise not acquire, my own curiosity – all are reasons to go ahead. There are some blocks, and adding money to the Roald Dahl estate is one of them.…[Read more]

Many thanks, @daedalus.
Having thought about it a bit more, I’m going to restrict entries to one per person.
Although lots of competitions allow multiple entries I think that as the Den monthly competitions are small, double entries would skew the chance of winning too much in a double entrant’s favour. If several people were likely to post two…[Read more]

Personally I think that would be fine, John. I can’t see anything in the rules against it. I don’t think you’d need a pseudonym either.
But before you go ahead I’ll check with a higher authority. @daedalus – over to you, please!

One of the novels I enjoyed reading in 2019 was The First Day by Phil Harrison. For the February competition please write a piece which depicts or refers to the first day of something – anything you like.
It can be a complete story or the start of a longer one. Maximum 400 words but a shorter entry is fine.

Thank you, @janeshuff . This is the first time I’ve won a monthly Den competition and I’m really pleased, and especially so as everyone else’s entries were excellent and a delight to read. Many thanks!

Thanks, @Daedalus. I’ll read the article with interest 🙂
I can use castor oil as a bit of sensory detail in my novel. It was just that I know the smell of linseed but can’t remember the smell of castor though tins of Castrol were ubiquitous during my childhood, as was the smell of oil in general.I suspect the laxative story was probably…[Read more]

I’m very sorry you and your son have had to cope with a cancer diagnosis, @skylark.
I’ve never signed up to any social media and so far haven’t felt tempted. Not just the polarised views but the amount of time it can take up!

Very good description of the process, Libby.
And we must not forget the immense power of steam!
Keep on chuffing 🙂
