Libby replied to the topic Regular Den competition – where next? in the forum Monthly Competition 7 years, 2 months ago
How about every two months to start with and see if that works? I’m sympathetic to John’s suggestion of quarterly but if part of the aim is to exercise one’s writing muscles with different stories or styles then frequency seems relevant. So maybe see how we get on and go to quarterly if that’s necessary?
If we did open votes would voters give a…[Read more]

Maybe not allow yourself to plant bulbs until x words written/edited? Lx

Morning. FEEL YOUR PAIN. So… what is it that you want to be getting on with?
Oh! That project?
THAT IS AN AMAZING PROJECT, AND YOU NEED TO GET THIS FANTASTIC PIECE OF AMAZINGNESS WRITTEN!!!It’s never about publishing / publishers. You are a writer. You are an artist. Fuck everyone else. You know you’re calling. Do it because it’s play, it’s…[Read more]

I am liking the Fuck Everyone Else motto! I did some plot editing and then planted bulbs. Today I am going to stare at the next round of paper edits whilst dying of endometriosis. But I will be dying with my special purple editing pen in hand, which totally counts!
-
Oh, Raine – I feel your pain. Hope you manage to feel more comfortable soon. Endometriosis is a real be-arch! And yay to getting bulbs planted AND doing some writing as well. x

Oh Raine my daughter has endo (we think) and it’s a killer. That, plus writerly lack of mojo, definitely calls for the Fuck Everyone Else approach – henceforth FEE – and gin, and tea, and chocolate. And I just read your beautiful, heartwrenching In the Dark Garden and I am reminded again of your writerly superpowers – even if you’re not feeling it…[Read more]

Henceforth, this is the official Den motto:
‘It’s never about publishing / publishers. You are a writer. You are an artist. Fuck everyone else. You know you’re calling. Do it because it’s play, it’s creating, because it brings you joy.
Just do it.’
Thanks to @philippaeast 🙂

You’re welcome! *doffs cap*
And I threw a typo in for good measure. Just to prove (kinda) my point.

So sorry you’re feeling down @philippaeast . I know you know it will be worth it in the end but the road there is hard. Am sending moral support.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate it. The scones and tea are delicious.
“Exhausting” “painfully high sheen”. I think you’ve got it, @kazg!

The Womagwriter blog has info on this too https://womagwriter.blogspot.com/
(a useful site if you’re thinking of submitting to women’s mags)And Della Galton blogged about it a couple of months ago on her site.

Of her novels, I’d go for The Past. Though I also like The London Train for the way it includes contemporary issues and anxieties.
The short stories are even better. I’d start with the last volume, Bad Dreams. -

PPS Actually I liked it, but I’m a big Hadley fan. However I didn’t put it down thinking I’d like to read it again.

Ooh I’ve never read anything of hers. Could you recommend one, @libby?

I think I agreed with Andrew Motion’s review too. Read Warlight when it came out and memory of details is beginning to fade. But, yes, a little disappointing. Sort of changed its nature part way through?
PS Motion’s review of Tessa Hadley’s latest, Late in the Day, pretty spot on too though I enjoyed it a little more than he seems to have done.…[Read more]-

Hello @Daedalus, you probably know about this website https://solentaviatrix.wordpress.com/
but thought I’d post the link just in case. And for anyone else who’s interested.
There’s a new item on it about Beatrice Shilling who cured the Merlin engine flooding problem. And someone has written a play about her. -

Newbury is my adopted home town, Ath. Needless to say it’s less romantic now though steam trains do pass through as I’m sure you know.

Thank you @johnalty and well deserved Jonathan @jd73. As Daeds said, a tour de force. I really enjoyed both your piece and his.

Future Sound
On the doorstep in the dark, with a glass of wine. At other times when doing this duty she’d drunk coffee. It didn’t matter, just something to nudge along the twenty minutes which might be slow if there was nothing to report.
She looked out to the lane where bare, rounded oaks stood under a sky that was clear to the stars, and no…[Read more]

Untitled (398 words)
In the dark before dawn the phone woke me. Its light made me squint. A window was broken at the shop, said a female police officer.
I pulled on a thick jumper and skirt and, with a thumping heart, drove into the centre of town. My shop – high-quality second-hand women’s clothes – was in a small road off the high stree…[Read more]
