Congratulations, Sandra! I was going to order a cpy but would love to have a signed one. Can I order one too? Let me know how much.

Congratulations, Sandra. I’m so glad you got there in the end. This always did sound an intriguing plot.

  • PS Bought myself a range of nit and head louse treatments and am doing a different one everyday plus washing everything I’ve been in contact with everyday. I can’t bear the thought of giving them to him…

    • Oh, bless you! All I can say is that from experience in school (we were lucky – yes, we had nits at times, but managed to get on top of them pretty quickly by just wet-combing with a nit comb) if they keep coming back, there’s a source somewhere that you’re coming into regular contact with. In our case, a girl in the class who…shall we say that…[Read more]

  • I am now at my Dad’s looking after him for a week. I am trying to write a bit and I do have the time but other things tend to crowd into my head. Mainly how happy I am to have this time with him while he still knows me and how lovely my OH is with him. I’m sitting here supposedly writing the villain revelation scene of my WIP but I can’t help…[Read more]

Congratulations Sandra! An 8-year gestation after a sprint start 🙂 Well done on persevering and turning your dream and idea into a proper, finished book!

Oh well, it won’t be the same at York without you 🙁

  • Athelstone replied to the topic DIY soapbox in the forum Podium 6 years, 10 months ago

Will you have copies at York? I definitely want it signed!

  • Thanks, everyone. Bit of a relief, back on track now. It’s the context that makes all the difference. The song is about seeking adventure now, because it’s later than you think. Eg:
    Hitchhike down to Mexico,
    Drive to Kathmandu,
Better do it now, my friend,
    Time catches up with you.

    Thanks again, everyone.

  • Thanks Jane. The previous line, which I’m still working on, is something like:
Go now, go now, don’t hesitate, your only master’s you,
Don’t ever let yourself regret the things you didn’t do.

I think in that context it’s clearer. No?

  • That’s what I got from it, John, but I did have to think.

  • Hmm. It was intended to mean if you seek adventure now it will not be necessary to later regret not having done so, but it does seem to imply the opposite.
Good line but in the wrong song!
Jonathan, I sing like a cat with its tail in a mangle, but maybe someone else might want to sing it. My interest is in the music and words.
    Thanks, both of you.

  • Does this line: “Don’t ever let yourself regret the things you didn’t do” immediately mean to you: Don’t regret being adventurous? When I analyse it, it seems to mean different things. Maybe context is important to the perceived meaning. It’s a song and so it needs to pan but I’m beginning to wonder if it means what I meant it to mean!

  • I so need help! What can I buy in the UK to get rid of nits? Can anyone help? Anyone with school age children? I would like to say I was asking for a friend but I might be lying!

    • Something like Full Marks from Tesco medicine shelves (or any big supermarket or Chemist) or ask in a chemist for what they recommend. Or if you want to avoid chemicals, use a lot of conditioner (really – a lot) and work it in well. Leave for at least 15 minutes and comb out with a fine-tooth nit-comb (that you can also buy at a chemist)

      • Thanks Ath. What I need is chemicals! I have tried everything else. We are off to the UK to look after my dad for a week and I absolutely cannot give him head lice. They have just come back again and I cannot buy anything effective (with chemicals) unless I have a prescription.

        • We fought about 3 major battles when our kids were little. The proprietary treatments you can get in a chemist or supermarket worked then and I’m sure they will now. I seem to remember Lyclear is what we used. The lotions are a real pain to use, but I think the Lyclear shampoo was easier. Ordinary washing isn’t much use; apparently they actually…[Read more]

          • Sorry, I should have said, I cannot buy anything strong IN FRANCE without a prescription. I’ll be at the chemists first thing tomorrow morning then, whispering furtively over the counter.

            • Jane, I had so many battles with my kids, I was exasperated, specially as my girl had double-thickness hair. This doesn’t help to get rid (they must have moved on a time-or-three since I did battle), but I have heard that once they are gone, using a serum on the hair makes it more difficult for eggs to adhere to it. Never tried it out (no serum…[Read more]

      • My daughter is a hairdresser and has recommended going to a chemist for products that give best results and to diligently follow the instructions on the back of the bottle. We used a tea tree shampoo when she was a child, which was effective with one of the fine nit combs when the hair is wet (after shampoo).

All bedding and clothing that has…[Read more]

        • Thanks both. They are tenacious b******s. This is the second time they have come back so your daughters recommendations are not falling on deaf ears, GippsGirl. I am on the ferry at the moment and will be first in the queue at the chemists tomorrow morning. Luckily my OH is fairly bald but I will be making him have a precautionary treatment as well.

I’m away to Cornwall via Bath tmrw for a tour of cousins. I have a pile of editing and the monthly comp to do while away… (don’t say to take time off and relax because I need something to distract me from my in-laws!!). Can English people confirm England is doing sunshine at the moment, please?

    • Best to check forecast, @raine . Showers were predicted for the English west country – I think for tomorrow and Friday??

      • I have relatives in Weston super Mare so keep the forecast for there on my phone. The forecast there is rain on Friday and Saturday and then fine weather again. Daytime temps around 20 degrees, starting to rise a bit from Sunday.

  • Bringing a gun into a house changes it.

It doesn’t matter that it’s locked away, out of sight. There’s something tangible – a weight, a tension – that comes with the knowledge of its presence, which terrifies me more than him.

He explained the gun’s for protection.

What extra protection could he need? He has his expression, his speech…his…[Read more]

  • Not of the same calibre as some, I gladly concede (don’t envy the judge!), but this proved to be a great exercise to get the ‘fresh writing’ juices flowing – thanks, Sandra.

Bringing a gun into the house changes it all, doesn’t it? As soon as she caught sight of Daddy’s new addition, taking pride of place in his shiny cabinet, Annie dem…[Read more]

  • I second that, Sandra. Struggling to get started on next WIP, so might try and come up with something this time.
