You’ll have to be Kate 1 and Kate 2, like the Things in Dr Seuss!! 😉

  • Well done, Sea! And thanks for setting us off on a monthly comp journey again here in the Den, Daeds.

So…I live in an East Midlands town. With a university, a canal, a market, wealthy hillside houses, poorer terraces town centre and large housing estates springing up on the outskirts. So if you need to run any specifics past anyone, let me know!

But…for a story of abduction and return, perhaps it doesn’t matter which of the settings you pick.…[Read more]

  • Had a great day on Saturday at this event – have blogged about it under the same title on the Scribbles if you are interested…

You can always learn something new, whatever stage of your writing you’re at.

Am at Wolves and Apples tomorrow… Lots of well known children’s authors speaking or leading workshops (Anne Fine, Tamsin Winter, Narinder Dhami, to name but a few) so will be interesting to see what they say. Also got a 1-2-1 with a publisher. There’s bound to be a blog in it.

I always ask for Debi, cos she is editrix supreme. It meant I had to wait sometimes, but it was always worth it. Not sure who else they have on the books for editing…

    It’s sloe time on the Scribbles… https://squidgesscribbles.blogspot.com/2018/09/its-sloe-time.html

So, nothing at all to do with writing, except that I wrote about sloes!!

  • Squidge replied to the topic My failure in the forum Podium 8 years, 1 month ago

crossed with you, Alan. Is failure not trying, or not winning? I’d say the former. Because if you don’t try, you might never win. And even if you don’t win because you never enter a comp, you have still succeeded in writing something.

Not sure ‘enjoyment’ comes into my reason for writing – it’s something that can feel like a chore at times! And…[Read more]

I think with anything creative, there’s the element of personal preference. You know I arrange flowers – well, I see some designs and think ‘how the heck is that flower design?’. Especially when it’s something like a single flower head and a twig. Yet others I see are amazing feats of engineering and have flow and rhythm or colour, and I’m blown…[Read more]

Oh goodness, yes – we are our own worst critics!!

On the cloud, we often talked about ‘failure’ and ‘success’ and how differently people perceived the definitions of them. So I completely understand that you view not being placed as failure – it was one of a whole range of responses we used to get.

Me – I enter very few comps because I hated…[Read more]

Definitely not failure if you’ve tried some comps – you had to write the bloomin’ entry first! And from experience, competitions can be a matter of luck as well as great writing – does the judge like your particular genre? Your style? I know from peer-judging comps on the cloud, my own preference for reading material comes through in the kind of…[Read more]

Hooray! I’ve had such a naff day so far, I can’t even think about writing…with or without tea!

I did the same as Ath – several times over. Price is often based on the length of your manuscript, and varies from editor to editor/company to company.
But a good editor is definitely worth paying for – just be absolutely certain that your MS is as polished as you can get it before you send it (use trusted beta readers for eg) to save doing it…[Read more]

    • I paid ~£600 for a 109K ms via the Cloud, but have since learned it is cheaper, by ~30% to approach an editor direct.
You may find that authors in the genre you write in are willing to edit – there’s certainly loads on the crime circuit.
I have to say I got far more help from beta readers.

I blame the fellas eating at the keyboard – the crumbs get stuck underneath, especially on the lap top 😉

And apologies – just read this through and it seems my u is not working very well on the keyboard! Pshhh. Authors. You’d think they’d check their spellings, wouldn’t you? (And of course the blasted u has worked perfectly all through this post…)

    • 😀 I have a w that doesn’t work on my laptop keyboard, and a slightly sticky shift button on my external keyboard! I blame the complete lack of dusting.

    @raine – found it. The kitchen saga…
Basically, we have a worktop that is not level (actually goes the ‘wrong’ way so water runs away from the sink) with the point where the join is on that worktop opened up. We have self opening drawers because they were not put in level. Or floor was re-screed for times before it was good enough to lay vinyl…[Read more]

@raine – what on earth had I posted that sounded so horrendous?! Not been on for a few days, so it’s all disappeared off the wall…

Sirtanic – of course! I think Neil’s right, it was 2013 for us all, cos I was working on Rurik (who is now Tilda) and think I’d published Granny Rainbow in that year so I had the confidence to revisit the novel.
Much good it did me – as I edited it again for the milioonty-umpteeth time last year. Thank goodness it’s got a contract with it now…
