I am not going to explain what these choices mean – not now anyway. They will have a big influence on your story but I have every confidence that you will cope. You have all the skill and application necessary. I will explain when I reveal full details of the theme, but that won’t be until the group becomes private.

And please don’t take these…[Read more]

On the face of it, what you have to do is quite simple. However, those of you have been through this before in previous challenges will know that in fact it is extraordinarily tough.

When the writing stage of the challenge closes on 28 February 2027 at 22:00 UK time, the voting stage begins. No doubt most of you will have read many of the entries…[Read more]

I had allowed the site maintenance to build up and ended up doing a pile of it yesterday. As usual I tested as much as I could, but if anybody spots a problem, please let me know.

    • Incidentally, some Denizens may have seen news reports about a serious vulnerability in PHP, a variety of software used extensively in websites. The Den is currently running a patched version which protects us from this, so worry not.

    • Our group seems to have gone a bit wonky. Clicking on a thread causes this to appear. Oh, bother! No topics were found here.

      • I think it’s the latest BBPress update. I’ve rolled this back to the previous version. Can you tell me whether the problem has gone? I see there’s another update about to be released. It’s possibly a fix for the last one, but it hasn’t arrived with us yet.

        • That’s fixed it. Thanks for dealing with so quickly, Ath.

          • I think the update-in-waiting also fixes it, so I’ll push that out if somebody would be kind enough to check whether it does

    • Thanks @libby and @katemachon. That was the problem I had on my Testing Group and also on the Test Den. I didn’t spot it at first as these seem to be the only two groups that had a problem. reading the update notes, it looks as though the previous version of BBPress (which gives us the group forums) attempted to improve security because in some…[Read more]

  • A quick reminder that there’s a fortnight left for this month’s competition. Details:

For the October competition please write on any theme and include in your story two or more of the following words:

Uniform (as a noun or adjective)

    Cumulus

    Television

    Mood

    Spanner

500 words max, deadline midnight 31st October.

  • Very good point about the fuel Richard. I’m sure the BRM would have relied on fuel evaporation for cooling too – looking at those early 50s cars, the radiators don’t seem as big as you might expect, and the Alfettas often seemed to have part of the intake blanked off.

I can see the initial appeal of the H16. The V8 was a darn good engine,…[Read more]

For anyone who likes to know what other people read, I’ve updated my recent book list on my profile.

A new series of A Good Read starts tomorrow (Mon 12th Oct). Radio 4, 3.00 pm. Is anyone else as addicted to this programme as I am? 😀

  • 337 words (inc. the title) and I managed ‘mood’ and ‘uniform’

    FREEDOM JONES; AN INTRODUCTION

He remembered a time when he had been ordinary; when he had played with the other boys. A time when he ran, fought, laughed, and scraped knees with the other boys. When they had climbed trees and stolen fruit and snatched apple scones from the kitchen…[Read more]

  • Easy peasy

Yesterday evening, me  in mindless  mood, scrolling between television programmes, and phone an Instagram a reel came up, featuring the ever- crumpled face of Mick Jagger. He answering some question about song writing, where he got his inspiration from.

His ‘Everywhere! -Sometimes I only have to look out the window –‘  spanne…[Read more]

  • Thank you @Athelstone , and thanks also to Jill, Sandra and Seagreen for kind and encouraging comments.

    FICKLE HEART

The small fluffy Cumulus clouds at dawn had promised a fine day, but by eight o’clock they’d grown into dark, lowering beasts threatening a thunderstorm ahead.  I resigned myself to a day indoors and this did nothing to improve the already black mood that had descended the night before when I received th…[Read more]

  • I’m not surprise your story was picked @Libby, it was really top notch piece of writing.

Thanks for the theme, @Seagreen. It certainly made me think hard!

  • Thank you @Seagreen ! The prompt was a challenge, in a good way, and I’m very pleased to have been picked from such a strong collection of stories.

  • I was pleased to have my mind returned to the time I effortlessly wrote dark, so thank you for this, challenge, Sea, ad well as all the contributors – entertaining every one, but I confess to especially enjoying Libby’s contempt for the policeman.

  • No need for apologies, Seagreen – I’m sure we all understand the delay.  You set an intriguing challenge and have given a comprehensive and thoughtful judgment on each darkly intriguing entry.  I loved all the others and echo the reasons you have expressed.

Congratulations, Libby.  Well deserved.  As I read, I could almost feel myself in the cha…[Read more]
