This story has just been accepted into the Mechanics Institute Review. Randomly named journal, but I’m pleased it’s found a good home. 😊

Went to Stephanie Hutton’s ‘Psychology of Character’ workshop on Saturday. If she does one in your area, I’d recommend it. Really thought provoking and insightful for character development.
I have some work to do…

    • Sounds fascinating, Raine. It was in Glasgow wasn’t it?

      • Raine replied 7 years ago

It was, aye. Fascinating day & met some lovely writers. She’s planning more in London etc, so I’d keep an eye out in case you are in the UK for one.

  • Yeah, I’d agree, i think the comp works best as a pressure-free place for people to dip their toes in the water or play around a bit. Nice, encouraging comments are a great way of supporting that, but more critiquey comments, although a wonderful thing would perhaps be more useful in the critiquey Forum, or direct posting/messaging, and of course…[Read more]

THanks for the interesting post @richardb. 🙂 I did laugh at Harry critisising the very services that JW offer! I guess their taught courses are less in depth than an MA, but it’s the same principal. As someone said (@janeshuff?) I love that the SE course attracts a wide range of writing genres/styles so there seemed no gravitation towards some…[Read more]

  • Sorry for absence … Yes, I like the idea of (positive) commenting within the comp thread, and if sub-threading isn’t an option then tagging people is a fair second best, I guess. So yes please do jump into the current comp if you wish to comment. It will be a nice way for people to get a bit of feedback regardless of the comp results. As @daedalu…[Read more]

When I see post from people talking about some version of UWS or whatever the letters were, it seems to have a lot to do with being arty with words but without really knowing what they want to say. And not just for the joy of playing in the wordbox, which I think most writers have done at some point or another (gods, but teen-me loved fancy words,…[Read more]

  • Yes, I like all of those. I never really understood the Cloud thing of ‘comment on the person’s wall but not on the thread’. This thing is pretty informal anyway. So Perhaps we can allow, indeed encourage, comments, with the slight caveat that people don’t go heavy on crit or be negative.

  • Sorry I was MIA recently – thanks to all for contributing and it looks as though you’ve all sorted things. Well done, going to look at new comp stuff now

  • I’m trying out a different format for this based on discussions, so am giving us a two month window to help more people post. There wasn’t a massive consensus on how to select winners so for this one, I’ll stick to just me choosing, unless anyone wants to message me their preferences and then I’ll make it a combined thing.

    So… the task this…[Read more]

Agreed, it’s a little ironic that Rubenhold seems to have done the exact thing she was hoping to undo. Sigh. It actually serves as quite an interesting example of unreliable narrators and self awareness, and our ability to retrain our own ingrained biases. I read a lot of stuff about ‘decolonising’ in ref to both the colonised and the colonisers,…[Read more]

Mutated the quote, I know. Sorry. In my defence it didn’t say the quote had to be exact. Plus, I know ‘ghosting’ isn’t about ghosts, but I like ghosts, and am too old to write about ‘ghosting’! 😀

Snuck in under the wire for the April (extended) monthly comp. 🙂

    Aconite and Forget-me-not.
    (347 words)

To you who I’ve haunted, will you listen? I have whispered stories in your ear and did you hear them? They were both your stories and mine, your sins and yes, mine too, and when I paid for both of us, you thought yourself free. So I came, did I not, to remind you. I have been the footfalls behind you in t…[Read more]

Today is finish transcribing edits day, and tmrw is write monthly comp day. Cat disagrees on all of these points.

  • Raine replied to the topic 'The Five': A Dissenting Voice in the forum Blogs 7 years ago

Interesting, Richard. I’d heard some of the reviews/hype/chat about the book, and liked the idea of presenting the women as three dimensional people – something other than just another dead whore. By the the sounds of it though, Rubenhold equates the women sleeping alone with them being absolved of any contributing blame for what happened to them,…[Read more]

Hullo. Back from easter (we don’t do easter monday in Scotland, no idea why. Something to do with the English stealing it off us, probably). I have done NO writing and NO editing over the hol, which means I have LOTS to do now. Gah. Tea.

    • Welcome back Raine. Hope you had a great hols!

      • Sincere apologies for not welcoming you back sooner, Raine. I’m afraid I was engrossed in the ironing. Welcome back! Those English, eh? Thank goodness I’m Italian.

      • Good luck! We’re rooting for you! And ignore that cat…

  • Thanks for that @clebs, great to see your enthusiasm. Some good thoughts there. I’m bogged down in various commissions with time running out fast at the moment, but will gather this all together asap
