Andrew Wille's DIY MA course 6 years, 3 months agoOh crikey. That took me back and then whizzed me forward. I haven’t tried this exercise, but I think I will try to find time for it now you’ve done it and shown us just how powerful the stuff that comes out can be.

I take a positive view and think that we will be fine. Like you I don’t want to discuss the pros and cons here. There’s been enough elsewhere.
I have had the Brexit blues while the whole thing has rumbled on, though. The uncertainty has been most unsettling and my writing has also suffered. The deep splits in the country are very unpleasant…[Read more]

I don’t think mine’s going to happen. Sorry.
-
I’ve struggled this year. Too many other things happening but I have the beginnings of an idea and will do my best to get it to the finishing line even if it’s a bit rough.
-
Mine’s definitely not going to happen I’m afraid. The two months up to Christmas were very slow for writing and I had to prioritise the novel WIP.
Have drafted a monthly comp entry which I’ll post soon to assuage some of my guilt and disappointment.-
I’m going to have to hold up my hands in defeat. I’ve got two thirds of a very rough first draft and defintiely not enough time to produce anything readable although I am pleased I had a go because it has possibilities. I’ll carry on working on it in between all the other things and maybe post it some other time. I’d love to stay part of the group…[Read more]

Andrew Wille's DIY MA course 6 years, 4 months agoIt occurred to me two minutes after posting this that I have an actual break up letter in my other WIP. So here it is for good measure. If anyone wants to comment don’t feel obliged to comment on both. I’m just putting it here since it exists.
Dear Lucien,
I don’t know how to soften the blow so I’m just going to tell you what happened on Saturday…[Read more] -

Andrew Wille's DIY MA course 6 years, 4 months agoMaximilian,
I have told you a thousand times that this affair is wrong. As your teacher as well as your lover I have only your wellbeing at heart. Your whole future depends on your examination results and our continued assignations are putting everything at risk.
People are beginning to notice your less than formal behaviour towards me.…[Read more]

I have read the article. This kind of sneering attitude is exactly why the Brexit leave vote came as a surprise to the great and the good. And it is also why the GE vote has come as a surprise. An 82 year old woman from Co Durham was reported in The Times today as saying (I can’t remember verbatim) “I can’t believe they’ve voted this way in an…[Read more]

Andrew Wille's DIY MA course 6 years, 5 months agoI’ve been very bad and not even finished the reading assignment. Things keep cropping up to divert me. We are off on a cruise at Christmas with several sea days so I will catch up on all reading then if not before.

Andrew Wille's DIY MA course 6 years, 6 months agoCan’t remember it all, now, and I couldn’t record, but overheard in the gym changing room (possibly TMI!):
My sister bought a laser machine and now she doesn’t have any at all. Anywhere.
How much was it?
It was a few years ago. Three or four hundred I think. She just zapped the hairs every time they grew back. What do you use?
Immac. Every…[Read more]

Andrew Wille's DIY MA course 6 years, 6 months agoBeauty is in the eye of the beholder, they say, and I certainly feel that way about Le Guin’s gorgeous passages. Some were more gorgeous than others. It’s all very subjective. But I have to say that your gorgeous is also my gorgeous. I absolutely loved that piece. “a clatter of kaleidoscope birds” – sublime.

Andrew Wille's DIY MA course 6 years, 7 months agoI loved your overheard dialogue. Especially the one about the peas.
That was a pretty horrid dream, vividly described. I could imagine myself there. I was interested to hear it felt quite false and agree with JaneShuff that it might be interesting to consider why. It didn’t come across as false to me, although it did come across as much more like…[Read more]

Someone on Jericho has suggested that the best way to pick up typos is to read the book backwards. Much though I hate typos, I’m not sure I hate them quite that much.

On top of all of that you have to deal with page proofs? I had fondly imagined that at least would be the publisher’s job. They certainly make you earn your crust, don’t they?
Thank you (I think) for this insight into the process. Before I smash my computer and run screaming for the hills, I must congratulate you on seeing it all…[Read more]

Andrew Wille's DIY MA course 6 years, 7 months agoWow. That was a tough read. But it has struck me how all of our I Remember pieces have been a tough read. Not in the same way, and not to the same degree. But that seems to be what we do, mostly, when remembering. I wonder why.
Hugs, Hilary.

I’m so happy that we’ve got together to do this course. Although it hasn’t (yet) got me out of a logjam with a current WIP it has inspired me to re-write a previous WIP in which I have faith despite no interest from agents. I’ve dived in and am loving the process.
