Thanks for that @clebs, great to see your enthusiasm. Some good thoughts there. I’m bogged down in various commissions with time running out fast at the moment, but will gather this all together asap

I was thinking a PM to the setter would be the easiest way, and not putting too much responsibility on a smallish group of people, but we can always try it for a while and see how it goes.
An alternating competitive-non competitive challenge is an option, but how would we decide who set the prompt for the non-competitive months?

Good thought, thanks Libby. I do like the idea of regular writing prompts, but at the moment we seem to be struggling to assemble enough entries for the competition, so whether we could maintain both I don’t know. What’s the general feeling towards non-competitive prompts as well?

The Camp NaNo search doesn’t seem to be working at the moment so I can’t find you, unfortunately

There’s little I like more than seeing fabulous writers recognised. Great stuff Raine, enjoy it

Sorry, final thought – I personally like the competitive aspect, and I think the peer judging takes the subjectivity out of it somewhat, but how does everyone feel about Squidge’s suggestion of just making it a prompt/challenge? Could/should we make it non-competitive every so often?

Hooray @daedalus! The more the merrier

@kazg Just found you and sent you a message. Can you invite me now? What am I called?
-
Found you @janeshuff! You ARE called Janeshuff, but for some reason you don’t come up in the dropdown menu – but I think I still managed to send you a message and an invitation. I’ve think I’ve also invited @jillybean and @daedalus to join Camp – did that come through, you two?

The peer judging might be nice, so it’s only a case of totting up the votes. They do it this way on the Fantasy Faction monthly competitions and that seems to work OK. And then I suppose people can offer whatever feedback they like on any of the entries. A PM to the setter should do it.
OK then, the balance of opinion seems to be to go for two…[Read more]

Hi all, as we’ve discussed on the current competition thread (here, btw – please have a look at the prompts and consider entering https://www.denofwriters.com/forums/topic/monthly-comp-feb-2019/ ), many of us have found it a bit difficult to maintain an entry on top of everything else we have going on. And yet I think most people would agree that…[Read more]

Good idea
I think we probably need to have a wider conversation about how we run the competition, as the monthly flash thing doesn’t seem to be working as well as it did on the Cloud (and even there, there were some thin months). I know it’s difficult. I have been struggling for inspiration lately, and life has got in the way more than usual (new…[Read more]

We talk about voice a lot as writers but I rarely see resources specifically about developing it. This is interesting from Kirsty Logan

Brilliant, well done Raine!! I’ve still had rejections quicker, but this is good anyway

Cracking news! Where?
-
Anti-hero Anti-Heroin Chic. It was a flash from the monthly comps – the flower and the bee. Not paying, but I don’t mind that for flash. Nice wee surprise. 😊

Stupid phone tiny typing window. Ignore the ‘Anti-hero’ bit…
-
Talking of the monthly competition. We all, I think, failed to enter in February so it’s in abeyence/abeyance/halted. Could we do something? Extend the deadline to the end of March?
-
@janeshuff Yes, I’d been thinking that. I’ve just posted a comment along those lines, although I suggested to end of April, as March is running away with us.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

I thought Denizens might enjoy this interview with the author of The Chemical Detective, a thriller due out soon from Point Blank, an imprint of OneWorld. Those of you who were around in the Word Cloud days will of course know that author as Bric. It’s a fantastic novel – go and buy…[Read more]

Many, many thanks for this Kaz. Multiple lightbulb moments. As Philippa says, it can make a big difference finding a model that works for you (and indeed, different ones might apply themselves better to different works). I’m trying to structure a novella at the moment, which is obviously somewhat different to a novel, and some of the more s…[Read more]

So here it is – Part 3, the conclusion of the story of my publishing nightmare, and how I finally recovered the rights to my novel from an intransigent and uncaring publisher. It was financially costly – but not nearly as costly as it might have been, and taught me a great deal about what not to do next time. Final blogpost, with as much in the…[Read more]

That’s brilliant news Kaz. It’s like snakes and ladders, isn’t it?? Glad you’re still on an upward trajectory, and really looking forward to this book
-
This is AMAZING news, Kaz! Well done! Sounds really hopeful and positive and generally fantastic. I’ll be keeping fingers and toes crossed that aquisitions are quickly on board. WIll your agent be subbing more widely anyway, or are you waiting on this one first? And good luck getting back to the NaNo book. It feels like a looooong time since the…[Read more]

Thanks @raine, @daedalus, @janeshuff! Yes, Snakes and Ladders is exactly how it is. We’re only submitting to PRH at the moment; the situation is a bit unusual in that I got a response from them after pitching directly to them, before I’d even signed with my agent (which happened just after, actually). They’ve already given me editorial feedback so…[Read more]
