Mine is becoming a more interesting story than I’d thought it was but it needs more time so I’m not going to enter. Good luck with yours if you do enter. -

Hi @Daedalus
Thanks for taking time out to answer my thoughts.
I hadn’t thought of it that way before, that film/video is better at placing significant information in the background of shots. That’s something that can be difficult in writing — at least I find it difficult — and often requires a setting to be introduced earlier than the.…[Read more]

I did the same with this reply as so often before: typed it, went to check something, got distracted, forgot all about it, closed the laptop, assumed I’d sent it.
Mark 2.
Thanks @daedalus. I find that I remebered more than I thought, although We’reNot in Kansas Any More had eluded me for a bit. The two earlier ones were first, the Intercity…[Read more]

Well – I replied but it has not posted. Hmmph. Will try again.
There’s a little red light vessel LV18 at Harwich. They did broadcast from it a bit, I think.
https://www.radiomuseum.org/museum/gb/trinity-house-lightvessel-no.-18-harwich/.htmlThis wiki has quite a bit of info about ship damage. Mi Amigo seems to be the main one…[Read more]

@daedalus there is a small, red lightship in Harwich. Lightvessel LV18.
They did a bit of broadcasting from there.
There’s a wiki on Radio Caroline which mentions ship and storm damage. Mi Amigo is the main one
I did link to it and the LV18 info but the site here seems not to like my posts so I am trying again without.

Thanks for that Bella – I had the faintest twitch of the lightship being involved but if I was right it would’ve been earlier.
My Radio Luxemburg memories are centered around a Bakelite radio the size of a microwave and winding a needle back and forth across a yellow chart, until I found it, but I was only allowed the radio in my bedroom when I was ill.

@Daedalus, that’s so unutterably awful it’s tipped all the way over into wonderful!
@libby, @athelstone, thank you. I’m delighted with my foxy. π
I think you’re right in that figures are often used as a massive ‘THIS IS WHAT THIS BOOK IS’ flag, like for bodice rippers or YA urban romantic fantasy, or twee historical rags-to-riches stories.…[Read more]

@Daedalus, it was mainly making the manifests more fleshed out (so to speak) so they felt more real and the way they worked made more sense. So small tweaks throughout rather than a big edit. And totally justified, I think. I am prone to the vagueness, as you know!!

Thank you @Daedalus. It’s a great mag & the editorial team were fantastic throughout. The acceptance followed on from a revise & resubmit, so it took a while but I’m delighted it’s out.

Oh no, @daedalus, we’re not going to be haunted by all the babies murdered, are we? π
Seriously, good luck with that. If anyone can, you can. -

@Daedalus, I know exactly what you mean: most of my novels start with a conversation between two characters, me thinking they’ll be the opening chapter, then, as things develop, I find they’ve moved to the middle of the middle.

@Daedalus: the story is in ‘What becomes’, the theme of which comes from the song, and it the tale of a man and a woman, previously unknown to each other, having sex in a hotel bedroom.
I’ve never tried an all-dialogue story, but have to say what were served up here showed similar skills to Kennedy’s. -

Thanks @richardb, @libby, @daedalus. Great suggestions. If you had a spare copy, Daeds, I would happily buy it.

Sorry – can’t really help. The only remotely sailingy books I can think of are @daedalus‘ eponymous book, ‘the life of pi’, ‘this thing of darkness’ and MM Kaye’s ‘trade winds’. He’d enjoy Daed’s perhaps? And ‘this thing of darkness’ is awesome, (& ~biographical) but the other two prob not ideal!

Many thanks, @daedalus.
Having thought about it a bit more, I’m going to restrict entries to one per person.
Although lots of competitions allow multiple entries I think that as the Den monthly competitions are small, double entries would skew the chance of winning too much in a double entrant’s favour. If several people were likely to post two…[Read more]

Personally I think that would be fine, John. I can’t see anything in the rules against it. I don’t think you’d need a pseudonym either.
But before you go ahead I’ll check with a higher authority. @daedalus – over to you, please!

@libby I didn’t for a long time (esp with Twitter) and now I have, it’s hard to switch off from it as it is addictive. But I think I’m learning to manage it better to get the best bits out of it without the worst bits dragging me down.
@janeshuff I’m sorry you and your family have been through a similar thing. It does change everything. I hope…[Read more]

The Brexit Blues. Ugh. Yes. And the Climate Change existential fear. And the daughter-entering-teen-sexual-harrassment-age dread. I tell you, grown men eyeing up a twelve year old girl makes me very VERY stabby.
But, yes, Brexit and the fundamental damage to our society that seems to have come about have had (are having) an effect on my general…[Read more] - Load More
