I’ve rewritten the first chapter of my WIP so many time I feel completely blind to it. Have I created a hook or is it just plain confusing?
Would appreciate any thoughts. It is young adult genre, so you’ll need to pretend you’re sixteen! I’m intending to apply to Write Mentor with it, so any nit picking also appreciated.
Were they watching me…[Read more]

OK, looks like I’m going to be ‘Silver Squidge’ as just Squidge was already taken…

Might join you – I can use it to be Camp NaNoEdMo again – that worked well for me once before.

For me, it’s about getting the time to think about short pieces, full stop. I’ve finally got going again on the novel, so my writing energy’s good, but I can’t commit to something every month on top.
If you wanted to split comp and non-comp, they could run on alternate months – that way, you can choose whether to be competitive or not. And I’ll…[Read more]

I like @Squidge‘s suggestion.
How about having both a competition as you’ve outlined it @Daedalus
and also a non-competitive prompt/challenge as a separate thing, also run every two months. It may be just me but I can see things becoming confusing if the one process variously includes a competition and a non-competition!If there’s no judging…[Read more]

Some lovely, quality writing, Bella.
I do agree with the others that I didn’t need quite so much information about the Bert back story. That did slow it down.
I liked this bit. ‘The conversation could go either way. She held her breath’ It really had me thinking uh-oh, what is this mother going to be like? Is she mentally unstable and going to…[Read more]

I thought this very well written and certainly not slow. However, as the opening to a novel, in view of what you tell us is going to happen, I feel it needs a hook. Perhaps a short chapter before this one, whetting the readers appetite.
Just my opinion, as always, so ignore at will. -

Didn’t feel slow at all.
Only bit that jumped out at me was the initial explanation about Bert early on – it felt quite tell-y and a bit out of place where it was. I was caught up in the conversation and Bethany’s dilemma, and it pulled me out of the dialogue.
I wonder if that info would be better moved to when Bethany mentions him later on…[Read more]

Wonderful news. Congratulations. And very interesting about the previous rejections. Subjective, as you say.

Every couple of months sounds good. I think it’s good not to have critique on the comps – if you post and you’re not looking for crit, then getting someone’s comments (however well intentioned) can be bruising if you’re not used to it.
Failing that, do we want/need it to always be a comp? There are other writing sites that post a topic/prompt and…[Read more]

How about every two months to start with and see if that works? I’m sympathetic to John’s suggestion of quarterly but if part of the aim is to exercise one’s writing muscles with different stories or styles then frequency seems relevant. So maybe see how we get on and go to quarterly if that’s necessary?
If we did open votes would voters give a…[Read more]

Thoughts:
A quarterly competition? Winner sets the subject for the next comp, but doesn’t judge it. Prize is a virtual Gold Quill.
The judging is either by a panel or a vote of the participants, or an open vote.
Critique of the entries? By who? Needs some ideas. Maybe submit the winning entry to a magazine or competition?Have a good weekend, everybody.

I am writing again… One whole chapter further on in The Black Ruby than I was at the start of this week.
About bloomin’ time! Oh – and for those who’ve read Rurik’s story (which is now about Tilda!), remember I said the publisher didn’t like ‘Mage of Merjan’ as a title cos they thought it gave the plot away too much? Am I being daft by…[Read more]

HUGE well dones on getting writing again! That’s fab news. 😊 Re the title, quest just makes me think of the six BAZILLION dragon quest books, so for me it’s too tied up with that. But given the age bracket, I wouldn’t have worried so much about LOTR overlap. Not much help, sorry.
-
I know – Beast Quest too… Ring Hunt sounds a bit dodgy if you say it quickly (!) but the search for the ring is central to the story, and there’s only so many ways you can describing hunting for something! Thinking cap on again…
-
Can it just be about the ring, rather than the search? The lost ring, the ring of x, a something in gold (if it’s gold!)…?
-
I can’t help with the title. I struggle with them as well, but great that you are back to writing!
-
The ring of Ambak… Perhaps.
-
Works better for me than Quest etc does. 😊
