Thank you @Seagreen ! This is a lovely surprise. The standard of entries is so high – I loved all the stories.
Thank you too @Sandra for your congratulations.
Right, now I must try to think of a comp theme that will be as good as Seagreen’s …

The Road to the Hospital I’ll be Visiting Tomorrow
The old sports model is red and open-topped, a Noddy car for the middle-aged and young elderly. How sniping I am today. From my hatchback I criticise the driver’s grey hair sticking out from his baseball cap. The passenger wea…[Read more]

Thank you all for a fabulous batch of stories.
Seagreen – you had me on the edge of my seat wondering what was in that letter.
Sandra – such a lovely heart warming tale.
Athelstone – I love that kind hearted Brenda got the reassurance she needed.
Alex – oh! Such a tale of mystery and deceit. Thus feels like the basis for a longer story.

Richard, did you hear the recent item on Radio 4 on the anniversary of the loss of the Penlee lifeboat? Unexpectedly they played the last call between the lifeboat captain and Falmouth coastguard. The shock of hearing it made me weep.

Thank you, Richard. As I read your account I wondered about Hawthorn’s personality and possible similarities to some of the heroes of the two world wars – talented and determined men whose skills and outlook were sometimes too abrasive for civilian life. This piece seems to confirm that On This Day: Mike Hawthorn, Just what DID happen on 22nd…[Read more]

You arrive home to find an unmarked envelope on your door mat. Who is it from? What does it contain?
Let me know in less than 500 words.

A STRANGE ENCOUNTER
Len slammed on the brakes of his electricity work truck and squeezed his eyes closed. This couldn’t have happened. It had to be his imagination. Too much beer last night and too much coffee this morning.
He peeked open his eyes and gave a screech more usual for his five-year-old daughter.
Pressed against the windscreen was a…[Read more]

What a lovely place and beautiful countryside, Richard. I’m not surprised you like it. I can’t comment on St Patrick, being very ignorant when it comes to saints, but I enjoyed watching the re-enactment and the story of the Romans.
So many mining areas have been returned to nature that it’s now impossible to fully imagine what they used to look…[Read more]

I use reviews too. They’re not my only resource when making choices but they let me know what’s out there in general – what some of the trends and hits are, and the interesting new names.
Then there are the books I want to read because I’ve read the author’s previous book(s).
There are the usual chance factors: browsing in bookshops both new and…[Read more]

In this week’s The Bookseller, the very large publishing company Hachette UK reports on its recent initiative to understand and cater to the UK’s very large customer-group of readers over 45. In 2018 they started an in-house group called AgeWise to do research and, presumably, to make recommendations to Hachette.
What took anyone in publishing so…[Read more]

Congratulations @hilary
I’ve ordered a copy of Sea Defences. I’m highly unlikely to be in Suffolk in January but have a great time at the launch.
Congratulations too for the flash win. Does the Bridport site post the winning stories? I couldn’t find any but the site isn’t the easiest to use.
-
Thank you for ordering Sea Defences, @libby
-
It’s arrived already @hilary . It’ll take me a little while to get to it – I have some library books to finish first. I’m impressed by your publisher. I hadn’t heard of Lightning Books before. In addition to Sea Defences I bought some novels and memoirs from their antipodean collection.
-
Thank you, Libby. Good to hear you found more books from them too.

Dipping in to say hi… ridiculously busy at the mo with Life, so barely time to breathe, let alone write! How is everyone doing at the moment, following the Queen’s death? Whether you’re for the monarchy or not, it seems to have impacted nearly everyone I’ve spoken to in some way, shape, or form. Sending hugs if you need them x
-
Doing well (I think). Similarly busy, especially yesterday when I was included in a tale of lost keys which necessitated a drive from Worthing to London and back.
-
Even for a republican like me it does feel like the end of an era. Thinking about how as a Scout we had to make promises to do our duty to the Queen etc, and every time you see a post box or a coin, or hear The King, it feels strange. Very few people have known anything different – @athelstone that sounds like an incredibly trying day, was it all…[Read more]

Oh blimey, Ath…can imagine that being rather stressful.

Busy here too, but yes, life seems to feel ‘on hold’ as we witness the end of an era. While not being an ardent Royalist, I did have a lot of respect for a queen who was the unwavering anchor for her family, showing how publicity could be done properly without scandalous revelations. I think I shall miss her.

I had a very strong (and somewhat unexpected) emotional reaction to the death. She has always loomed large in my life as my father is an ardent royalist. I’d expected to feel a bit sad, as I did when Prince Philip died, but I burst into tears when I heard the news. We were in Scotland and very nearly passed the cortege from Balmoral to Edinburgh…[Read more]
