This is a fantastic book. A perfect weekend read. You’ll learn a heck of a lot about the Peasant’s Revolt but won’t realise until the end because you’ll have been so absorbed in the story

Well, congratulations and I hope the book does wonderfully well.

I’m just sidling onto the podium here to say that the first book in my Medieval historical fiction trilogy of novellas came out at the end of last week.
I think I probably completely forgot to mention that I signed a three book contract in January – so er oops! and sorry about that!
As background, I like to occassionally leave the fertile fields…[Read more]

I wouldn’t worry about agents etc. If you send a Word document then they will understand that it should be viewed in Word; it’s usually what they ask for. I think your problem is that either your browser or Google Docs or whatever gmail uses for previews isn’t displaying Times New Roman properly.
There are things you can try to fix it, such as…[Read more]

Also, entropy magazine takes eclectic stuff, and very usefully keeps a ‘where to submit’ page for all formats of writing. They update it every 3 months I think.

No problem Kate. No point my compiling a list and not giving others the benefit of it. And given my patchy record with subs I’m glad if anyone uses it. It needs a bit of updating, mind

A list of potential homes for speculative short fiction. This is a working list. I started it so I would have some structure to my subs but thought it might be helpful for others, so have started adding pubs even when they are not suitable for me or my work. Feel free to suggest additions or amendments

Are you using gmail’s webmail service?
I just had a quick try and noticed that when I clicked on a Word document, it was opened in Google Docs and not Word. My suspicion is that Word is fine but there’s something wrong with the way gmail is rendering Times New Roman. If that’s the case, then a fix depends on what browser you’re using and what…[Read more]

I guess not. Google “troubleshooting font problems in word”, you should find this:

I wonder too 🙂
Can I ask for a bit of clarification? If you type out some text in Word using Times New Roman, it looks fine. When you send that as an email attachment and subsequently view it, it appears blurry and hard to read.
At the risk of sounding daft, how are you viewing the attachments? Do you open them with Word, i.e. if Word isn’t…[Read more]

Hi Jean,
I can’t be much help with this, I’m afraid. I have roughly the same set up, but not encountered any problems with fonts. I wonder if it’s worth running all the usual system tests (full virus scan, defragmenting), or perhaps uninstalling and reinstalling word? Another option might be to upload files into Google Docs and re-save there…[Read more] -

Yes, it was partly extraordinary luck, partly John’s skilful setting of the tone and throwing up some ideas before things got started and linking text after the selection, and partly in the selection and ordering of stories. (As I was going to write the opener, I got to see all the stories. It’s true to say there were a few that while being dec…[Read more]

I think the linking text definitely helped @squidge. As did the editors having a clear idea of what they were looking for and how to make it all fit together. And I think the opening and closing stories gave the anthology shape too. But we weren’t actually given that much of a premise other than ‘demon invasion of Victorian Britain’ which expanded…[Read more]
