KazG started the topic Class 3 Writing Exercise "I Don't Remember" – KazG in the forum
Andrew Wille's DIY MA course 6 years, 2 months agoGoodness. This one was really tricky, and then it spiralled off in a direction I hadn’t planned.
Has anyone else tried these “I Don’t Remembers?” That extra layer of knowingness or irony pushes it into different territory, for me.
I don’t remember not knowing how to wash blood out of cotton
I don’t remember if my mother told me, in pale wor…[Read more] -

I’m SURE she will @skylark 🙂
I think all second book doubts/worries are very normal and to be expected, especially with a big change eg of voice. But push those doubts aside and let that shittiness have its day. It’s all part of the process (and shitty first drafts are always so entertaining to look back on!).

Hello @skylark! and everyone else! How nice to see you all here having a chat. Exciting about your second book Mandy, I’m sure it’ll be a cracker. Are you feeling any of those second book pressures after a successful book 1? I loved Jessika so much – in fact there is a wonderful book shop here, my local one luckily, called Brunswick Bound. They…[Read more]

Commiserations, UK. It seems we’re all stuck with hideous right wing governments that our compatriots have chosen for us. In the case of the UK it really beggars belief that after 9 years of austerity – food banks, slashes to services, skyrocketing poverty – that the people who suffer the most under Tory rule have gone and done it again. I really…[Read more]

I came across this view from an ex-pat living in New Zealand. Some strong language for Denizens who prefer to steer clear. But I couldn’t find anything to disagree with.
Britain dutifully bows down to the ruling elite.-
I was going to post this anyway, Ath, but after following your link it has even more resonance: one of Sir Winston Churchill’s less popular pronouncements was that the best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter.

I have read the article. This kind of sneering attitude is exactly why the Brexit leave vote came as a surprise to the great and the good. And it is also why the GE vote has come as a surprise. An 82 year old woman from Co Durham was reported in The Times today as saying (I can’t remember verbatim) “I can’t believe they’ve voted this way in an…[Read more]

Andrew Wille's DIY MA course 6 years, 4 months agoYes that sounds good WB. Thank you.
I would appreciate a bit of space right now because as @janeshuff says I’m really enjoying the process, but I have a lot of other time pressures right now. It would be good to feel I had a little bit more time to wallow in each part of the course. That’s just for now, I hasten to add – the pacing of it is spot…[Read more]

Andrew Wille's DIY MA course 6 years, 5 months ago@Squidge ooh would you mind sharing those notes? I keep hearing about Julie Cohen and her post it notes etc! And I think Kate’s talking about the Toni Morrison excerpt from ‘Recitatif’, towards the end under the Action section.
I find that whole character analysis thingy quite daunting, frankly. At the early stages I just don’t KNOW all the…[Read more]

Andrew Wille's DIY MA course 6 years, 5 months agoShe’s good that Burroway, isn’t she? I’m guilty of one-trick dialogue so that’s something that I’m going to work on. (I too read the whole chapter, oops). I’ve never fully explored a character before writing, just a few bits to get me going, so that’s a new way of working for me too. Though I also like the look of the Distinguishing Features exercise.

Andrew Wille's DIY MA course 6 years, 5 months agoI have bought myself a special notebook! Which is surely the start of anything worth doing, no? 🙂

Andrew Wille's DIY MA course 6 years, 5 months agoI think they are pretty much perfect in length. Enough time for me at this busy point in my life to get to them and do the reading and give it enough thought, but not too much to lose momentum. Very happy with it, thank you! x
