Thanks, Richard. Have you been to Farley Chamberlayne? Itโs worth a trip for anyone in the area. I canโt remember what the house looks like, and the internet isnโt obliging, but FC is a deserted medieval village with a pretty church. It feels remote and wild despite close proximity to Winchester.

Thank you for the blog, Richard.
A school friend was a fan of Fairport and Denny. I enjoyed listening but not enough to keep up an interest after school. Was the house in Hampshire Headley ?Grange. Led Zep recorded there. I still listen to them occasionally but after I left school I switched to classical and have stayed there ever since.Tony…[Read more]

No problem, @athelstone
I thought at the time that as I’d started a new thread, it was waiting for moderation. Then I sort of forgot about it. It was from last year when book wholesalers were hampered by Lockdown 1 and therefore bookshops couldn’t simply order stock in usual way.
As a postscript, ordering from the existing stock of a small…[Read more] -

With apologies for starting a coronovirus thread but UK bookshops are really starting to struggle as their wholesalers have difficulty in supplying them due to coronovirus. As Richard says, this is seems more about style, and a rigid editor, than about the rich possibilities of first-person narrators.
I’m the first to agree that repetition of ‘I’ can be a problem, just as repetition of any word can trip up the reader. And the over-repeated ‘I’ can be hard to get rid of, as I know from my own efforts.
It can also…[Read more]

Happy birthday for this month, Ath! I’m not far behind you. It all feels quite unbelievable.
It all seems totally untrue, doesn’t it?
I’m this month too. Another June rose!!
Anything special planned? I’m pleased to say I shall have my family for a meal and a movie ๐
