I’m finding it very difficult to use. Have joined a group and posted something but now can’t locate it or the original comment it was a response to. This isn’t a plea for help, just a statement. I’ll battle on for a while. Am keeping a word.docx copy of any critiques I give in case I have to post them again.

Sometimes professional book reviewers complain that creative writing graduates have a CW style. I haven’t spotted it myself and perhaps am being dense. If any Denizens can describe it I’d be grateful!
I do notice trends and fashions but they seem to apply to most trad published novels.
Re the workshop style, there must be a danger that if you’re…[Read more]

A well deserved win, Raine. The voice is wonderful and the whole piece captivating.

I’ve just asked her on our group thread. There could be lesser Kates out there …

Thanks for befriending me on the JT, Ath! Now I’m off to find Kate. For greetings on JT it’ll be a question of ‘and anyone else who knows me’ until I get the hang of things.
-
You’re very welcome. I think I saw Kate, but I wasn’t sure whether it was Kate, if you know what I mean. I was going to wait until she adds a photo

Well, the “k” on the JT kate is lower case, which doesn’t seem like her at all.
-
And now it’s upper case. How confusing.

PS The odd layout is courtesy of the Den. It’s not some artistic effort on my part, though it could be due to my failure to understand Den formatting. 🙂

Here’s the opening scene of a drama. 349 words
The scene is a contemporary kitchen. Magnets hold lists to the fridge. Children’s paintings are on the walls. MARCUS, 70, sits at the table, idle, and SAM, 40, stands at a counter, preparing food. Marcus wears his hair longer than Sam and has a brass bangle and a leather bracelet on one wrist.…[Read more]

I’m happy to provide prompts. @Squidge has offered as well, so we could start with hers and I’ll do the next round?
Perhaps the next prompter could put their name forward during current prompt month IYSWIM.

I like @Squidge‘s suggestion.
How about having both a competition as you’ve outlined it @Daedalus
and also a non-competitive prompt/challenge as a separate thing, also run every two months. It may be just me but I can see things becoming confusing if the one process variously includes a competition and a non-competition!If there’s no judging…[Read more]

How about every two months to start with and see if that works? I’m sympathetic to John’s suggestion of quarterly but if part of the aim is to exercise one’s writing muscles with different stories or styles then frequency seems relevant. So maybe see how we get on and go to quarterly if that’s necessary?
If we did open votes would voters give a…[Read more]

Maybe not allow yourself to plant bulbs until x words written/edited? Lx

Morning. FEEL YOUR PAIN. So… what is it that you want to be getting on with?
Oh! That project?
THAT IS AN AMAZING PROJECT, AND YOU NEED TO GET THIS FANTASTIC PIECE OF AMAZINGNESS WRITTEN!!!It’s never about publishing / publishers. You are a writer. You are an artist. Fuck everyone else. You know you’re calling. Do it because it’s play, it’s…[Read more]

I am liking the Fuck Everyone Else motto! I did some plot editing and then planted bulbs. Today I am going to stare at the next round of paper edits whilst dying of endometriosis. But I will be dying with my special purple editing pen in hand, which totally counts!
-
Oh, Raine – I feel your pain. Hope you manage to feel more comfortable soon. Endometriosis is a real be-arch! And yay to getting bulbs planted AND doing some writing as well. x
-
Oh Raine my daughter has endo (we think) and it’s a killer. That, plus writerly lack of mojo, definitely calls for the Fuck Everyone Else approach – henceforth FEE – and gin, and tea, and chocolate. And I just read your beautiful, heartwrenching In the Dark Garden and I am reminded again of your writerly superpowers – even if you’re not feeling it…[Read more]

Henceforth, this is the official Den motto:
‘It’s never about publishing / publishers. You are a writer. You are an artist. Fuck everyone else. You know you’re calling. Do it because it’s play, it’s creating, because it brings you joy.
Just do it.’
Thanks to @philippaeast 🙂

You’re welcome! *doffs cap*
And I threw a typo in for good measure. Just to prove (kinda) my point.

So sorry you’re feeling down @philippaeast . I know you know it will be worth it in the end but the road there is hard. Am sending moral support.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate it. The scones and tea are delicious.
“Exhausting” “painfully high sheen”. I think you’ve got it, @kazg!

Hi Gerry! How are things?
Things are fab-groovy, super-duper, thank you. I hope and trust the fab-grooviness etc is equally well experienced by you and indeed all Denizens.
