If anyone’s interested – States of Independence, at De Montfort Uni in Leicester on the 21st March. Free event: talks, stalls, publishers etc, and Benjamin Zephaniah is one of the speakers! Hoping to go and have a stall so I can sell some books…

Andrew Wille's DIY MA course 6 years, 5 months agoIs anyone else getting bogged down with some of the examples in Burroway? I read them and just can’t make the connection to what she’s trying to portray. Beginning to think that it’s me at fault – that I haven’t got the ability to understand the more subtle nuances of the techniques. And if I did understand them, would it make me write any…[Read more]

Can someone remind me how to read comments that have been listed but don’t appear, please? Ta very muchly.
-
Do you mean missing comments on an update? 1) Click on the name of the initial poster to open their profile. 2) Select Activity from below their avatar/picture. You should be able to find the missing posts – not necessarily in a sensible order, but possible to work out what went where.
-
Even if it’s me that was the poster, Ath? I’ve got the notifications, but when I click on them to read, the original post isn’t showing more than one comment…
-
Even if it’s you who is the original poster. In other words, instead of logging on to the site and selecting Activity, go to the troublesome thread, select the profile of whoever started it, select Activity from their (or your) profile when it opens. Then scroll through the results below. If this doesn’t work then I’m not sure what to recommend.
-
“are” the original poster. How did I formulate such a horrible sentence?

Andrew Wille's DIY MA course 6 years, 6 months agoOK – here’s the link to Julie’s workshop at York (back in 2013! Yikes…) https://squidgesscribbles.blogspot.com/2013/09/playing-at-being-god-creating-characters.html
In this post is the link to a more creative – literally tear and stick version – way of answering questions about plot, characters etc. At the end of the post……[Read more]

Andrew Wille's DIY MA course 6 years, 6 months agoI’ll try and dig them out later today. Think I might even have blogged about it, but we’re going back a few years. Also got something that might trigger the unconscious brain into devising your character…

Andrew Wille's DIY MA course 6 years, 6 months agoWonder if it’s worth doing Julie Cohen’s character idea from York? I’ll have to dig out my notes – it shows the character in action more than anything by posing a series of questions.
Starting to wonder if I read the right bit of Burroway, as I can’t remember reading anything about a waitress! Must revisit…

Andrew Wille's DIY MA course 6 years, 6 months agoAfraid to say I find Burroway a bit wordy – which is ironic, given that I’m often too wordy myself! Still not had a chance to play with the characters yet…

Andrew Wille's DIY MA course 6 years, 7 months agoI’ll try…but it feels so unnatural! Maybe I’ll have to do two exercises – one that challenges and one that feels more natural?!

Andrew Wille's DIY MA course 6 years, 7 months agoI bought myself an academic diary and I’m jotting in it things I do connected to writing, especially to do with this MA.
I don’t write every day, so my target is to have at least one, hopefully two sessions a week. I’m currently NaNoing, so that’s changed the focus somewhat over this month.
I also want to go back to blogging more regularly again…[Read more] -

Andrew Wille's DIY MA course 6 years, 7 months agoThis will be interesting for me – I don’t normally have a clear picture of a character up front – they develop as I write them – so the character questionnaire will be a real challenge. Do I stick with how I usually work or try something new…?

Andrew Wille's DIY MA course 6 years, 7 months agoAll OK here – finding the time to do the writing is hard at the mo, so I need to work on that, but the timings aren’t unachievable. Just that my life needs to calm down!! When does Class 2 go up?

@janeshuff – I’ll try to find you. And yes, it all looks very different on NaNo from my first ever visit in June.

@Raine – I am a death-dreamer, too! I’ve been shot, drowned, stabbed – really weird to feel my life ebbing away in the dream.
I think the forced thing is definitely due to the fact that I try to…[Read more]

Andrew Wille's DIY MA course 6 years, 7 months agoThanks both, especially for the kind words about how I currently write.
I do have very vivid dreams, which are full of this level of detail. Sometimes, they’re full of sensation too, but this one wasn’t – I was simply an observer in this one.
Why did it feel false to write? I think it was because I was consciously trying to make it ‘gorgeous’…[Read more]

Kudos for sticking with it all, Philippa – it sounds like it has really taken a toll over this year.
Looking forward very much to reading it – I am sure that it will be worth every bead of sweat, nibbled fingernail and tear shed.

Andrew Wille's DIY MA course 6 years, 7 months agoLove it! It was Donny Osmond for me, but not for very long. Adam Ant pushed him out!
For I remember, I think we naturally turn to the most impactful memories – the really good or bad or unusual ones. I wonder if we tried to do a specifically ‘good’ version, how different it would be. Or how hard it would be to pick out those kind of memories?
