@jillybean – read your books pretty much in two days. Really enjoyed them. Love Gregory – big, brash, but loyal to a fault.

Couldn’t find them on Goodreads to leave a review though… Have you posted them there yet?

    • Thanks, Squidge. I’m so glad you enjoyed them 🙂
They are both on Goodreads but are easier to find if you search for them as Revolt the king’s knight etc
(tried to leave you a link but dialogue box didn’t like it.)

Really appreciate you taking the time to leave a review 😀

    Done it now, though…

Must download these! Have been remiss and not done it yet. x

  • Just received an email to say that my ‘One Cold Coin’ story from our first Den short story comp has been accepted for ‘From Bloom to Blizzard’, a charity ebook anthology produced by Write in for Leicester (wi4cLeic). To be published later in the year…

  • Enjoyed writing this, and coming back to it after a week away, thought Kate’s was a very worthy winner among a host of fab entries!

So I am no longer the mum of two children; I’m the mum of two adults (supposedly) as Squidgeling T was 18 last Saturday.

Feels very strange. Empty nest syndrome beckons…but so do holidays out of term time, opportunities to reconnect with Mr Squidge (you don’t realise how much of your identity is tied up with your kids until they are doing…[Read more]

    • Aww. In my view they should have left the age of majority at 21. Especially since they all seem to stay on the payroll for far longer than that anyway…

Anyway, congratulations on having two adults and enjoy some quality time with Mr Squidge.

    • Congratulations, Squidge. Enjoy your return to a more independent life!

    • It does change, Squidge. It can be a bit disorientating at first and sometimes a bit sad, but you’ll develop a new relationship with them which, even though it’s a totally different shape, completely fills the hole they leave behind. Odd that.

      • I’ve been somewhat strategic in helping my daughter to develop her independence. It was I who left home for trips away, leaving her to fend for herself (once she was working, I should add!). Good practice, I thought, for when she gets a place of her own – and she agreed. She has not long returned from her big first trip, spending three months in…[Read more]

    • It is a strange feeling, Squidge, which for me felt as though time had played a trick on me. It played stranger tricks when my granddaughter fledged, but suddenly you will wonder how you fit everything in. Athers is right, the holes are soon filled and the relationships blossom, or should I say metamorphose into something quite different and…[Read more]

      • Aw, thanks all. I know things do get easier – and become different – as we’re already on that road with our eldest. We’ll take it slow, and Mr S and I will no doubt talk about it all and fingers crossed we’ll find a new equilibrium soon.

    • All my nest-leavers are now in their forties(!!!) and yes, there’s huge benefit in re-discovering the bloke you remember from way back when, but also great to build new relationships with the emerging adults. All different. All totally rewarding.

  • Bringing a gun into a house changes it.

It doesn’t matter that it’s locked away, out of sight. There’s something tangible – a weight, a tension – that comes with the knowledge of its presence, which terrifies me more than him.

He explained the gun’s for protection.

What extra protection could he need? He has his expression, his speech…his…[Read more]

Bloody fantastic news, Kaz! Well done xxx

  • Nice. Might have a go as I’m in between edits…

  • Works for me! And with the subtitle, too…

  • Agree with you Raine, 100%! Loved Sandra’s start (among others!!) Well done, Sandra x

  • Tony – sorry, but Unrelenting Limelight doesn’t work for me either. Sounds like a tragedy set on a stage, and it sounds like your relative’s life was far from a tragedy.

You said that if you’re not familiar with the name, why buy the book?

Book buyers are a strange crowd, drawn in by all sorts of things. Surely it’s that ‘drawing in’ of…[Read more]

I really should be keeping the old writing muscles warmed up, but I’m waiting for an edit to be returned, for the publisher’s opinion of Black Ruby (my two lovely betas have pointed out the weaknesses I thought were there, so that’s good!) to come through, and it’s fast approaching the end of term here and I have a whole primary school library to…[Read more]

    • Thinking time maybe, Squidge?

      • YEah, mulling and marinading time! End of terms and holidays are always writing-time killers, aren’t they? I’m sure you’ve thought of it, but I always try to have something I can do on paper over the hols cos I’ve got a much better chance of grabbing ten minutes with pen than on computer (especially as it’s an old beast that takes 30 mins to power…[Read more]

    • didn’t I reply to this too?? Cos it’s GAWN…

      • Can’t believe how busy end of term is…

Yep, can do bits and pieces on paper, but I’m wary of putting too much effort in now if things change much further back and have an impact on later work. Such a fine balance. Doing lots of reading instead.

        • Reading is excellent @squidge. I’m not doing enough of that and feeling the lack myself. It’s such a good way of ‘filling the well’ isn’t it? Enjoy!

  • First off, I prefer your original working title – Limelight doesn’t say much to me, but the play on words makes me wonder who Lyttle was, and what sort of ‘long way’ was it? Journey? Promotion? Makes it sound quite comedic, too. It would certainly attract interest, regardless of whether anyone knows of your ancestor or not.

    With your subtitle,…[Read more]

  • Wow! Saw John’s news but didn’t realise Mad was in the longlist too! Flippin’ well done to both of you xx

Just wondering – those who are members of JW, is there any way of seeing what the mini courses or workshops are before you book a ticket? Wanted to see if there was anything I hadn’t done before, but I think I have to say I’m going before I can look at the detail, which seems a bit barmy…

    • I have checked the site without logging in. You should be able to see it all. Click on Programme at top of page, then go down to the day you want to see and click on the + button next to, for example, the mini courses section of the timetable and it should show you all that is available.

      • That’s what I tried – but it just gave me broad info about mini courses, and I’m sure said I had to book a ticket before choosing. I’ll have another go though…

  • Brilliant! Loved the idea of ‘what horse’…and the 14th C sex manual. 😉

Looking forward to reading. Well done, Jules x

OK – finished it. Did not put it down…

    Bloody brilliant.

I have to ask – how much of the premise dd you get beforehand? The stories all link so well together, I can’t work out whether it’s down to extreme luck in terms of the arrangement of the stories or whether the links written between each story are simply very well done to link what might…[Read more]
