I like Kate’s suggestion of a fortnightly writing topic. A clearly marked heading and space might draw in potential new members among people who are Googling for writing advice. But it would need the links problem to be solved.
I agree with Richard about subjects currently being hidden away.
As a member of Kate’s SE 2016 group, this site has…[Read more]

The Den’s been a lifeboat for my SE group. And I love the inspiration the winter writing challenge brings. It’s also lovely to be able to see the successes of people I met on the cloud.
But I wonder if, for the main page to be active, we need writers at different stages. I think we’ve all got a fair amount of experience on here, have writing…[Read more]

Sound Waves (470 words)
An aeroplane churns the sky but no siren has sounded, and behind the blackout fabric at my attic window there are no searchlights. The aircraft must be one of ours.
In my armchair I pick up today’s paper but find it hard to concentrate. We have all turned into experts in aircraft identification and the noise from this o…[Read more]

Re the intentional fallacy, that’s an illustration of how many things which used not have an ethical dimension now do so, or do so more than they did before. Food shopping is another example.
But back to literature, I recently discovered the Literary Friction podcasts

Gosh, that Mrs D cover is ghastly. And not very helpful.

Apologies, I thought I’d replied when I first saw it but obviously I hadn’t 🙁

With apologies for starting a coronovirus thread but UK bookshops are really starting to struggle as their wholesalers have difficulty in supplying them due to coronovirus. If anyone would like to read my HWA longlisted short story, it is now available in Sundial magazine at the below link. A Viking romp that I hope you will enjoy.

Congratulations, @katemachon . Sundial has done a super job with the layout and presentation. What a fabulous picture.
Well done.-
Thanks, Libby. I’m impressed with their attention to detail.

A Viking romp remembered and very much enjoyed again, and the picture beautifully matched.

Thanks,Sandra.

Great storytelling Kate, and I didn’t know you lived in Jersey!

Thanks, Jane. Not a Jersey girl, but been here 30 years. Are you a Channel Islander? Not a Guernsey girl, I hope. 😀
-
No. I am in France just down the coast in Brittany but keep on planning to visit with a friend who lives in Normandy

We used to like hopping across to St Malo.

I write in first person a lot and the overuse of I was something that was pointed out to me early on. The writing can end up feeling like a list of stage directions. I have found that the gymnastics you have to go through to avoid overuse does what Libby mentions and moves you closer into the character’s head as well as adding voice. As Richard…[Read more]

As Richard says, this is seems more about style, and a rigid editor, than about the rich possibilities of first-person narrators.
I’m the first to agree that repetition of ‘I’ can be a problem, just as repetition of any word can trip up the reader. And the over-repeated ‘I’ can be hard to get rid of, as I know from my own efforts.
It can also…[Read more]

What a tantalising range of stories and good use of the prompts. The standard is so high, and having a small number of entries paradoxically doesn’t make it any easier! In all of them I particularly enjoyed the voices both in the dialogue and the narration. I know Sandra’s piece is an excerpt from a longer work and Ath’s and Kate’s could be comp…[Read more]

‘What do I need this for?’
‘It’s a new cinema, I don’t know the way.’
‘Well, get out your phone and ask it to direct you, like any normal person.’
‘You know what happened last time I tried that. I ended up driving in circles for half an hour until my phone found a connection. A map on the other hand, can’t go wrong.’
‘Fine. Let…[Read more]
