In honour of the new year, the theme for this month’s competition is The Future. You can interpret that in any way you wish. Around 400 words but happy for it to be a lot less if you prefer.

Just got back from a lovely day out culminating in finally seeing Stars Wars nine to this. First time I have ever won anything! Thank you Janette for the competition and thank you everybody for the comments. I love the way these competitions inspire so many different takes on the same prompt and I am feeling very honoured that Janette chose mine.…[Read more]

Well done Jane – very well deserved – and thanks to Janette for the opportunity to try out a scene.

Only four entries this month, so easy to judge, yeah? No way. Each one was a delight to read and I’ve had to read them over again, and again, to decide on a winner.
Sandra, your prologue is a hook which begs me to read on and see how the ‘will they – won’t they’ conundrum pans out. Lucy, it would seem, has more facets than a brilliant cut…[Read more] -

This year, Santa brought me, Mrs Ath, and the in-laws…..norovirus.
-
Noooooo. You poor things. I hope you’re feeling better and ready to enjoy a festive New Year!
-
That’s grim, Ath. I do hope you’re all getting better. All the best.
-
About 20 hours in. Can now keep water down (which is nice). Bit annoyed that the in-laws didn’t tell us how I’ll they were until the middle of our visit. With D’s mum being an ex ward sister I’d have expected better.
-
I’d have been quite a lot annoyed ๐

-
Ugh … in-laws can be outlaws of the very worst sort …
-
What rotten luck. Hope all are feeling better x

Only hours to go and only four entries to the monthly comp. Go on, why not exercise your writing muscles ahead of the new year?

Slipping through the door at (nearly) the 11th hour. 400 words with title.
The Tent
When I was eight, my parents gave me a tent for Christmas. Of course, I insisted on spending the night in the garden. The coldest night of the year, but I wore them down with my relentless pleading until finally, with three pairs of pyjamas, two sleeping bags, a…[Read more]

Slipping in at almost the last moment… with 395 words:
On the last day of the old year, the family always walked to Rock Island. Chivvied by our mother and wrapped up well in woollen jumpers, tights, hats, scarfs and gloves. The time of day when dusk was falling like a dark chiffon scarf over the landscape. Weโd walk the sandy path along the t…[Read more]

I hope everybody had a good Christmas. Our Warner hotel Christmas break went off pretty well. For one thing, no cooking and no washing up โ you can’t knock that. It makes a nice change to be among the youngest people present โ and to see, all the time we were there, only one person using a smartphone. But…
I am by no means a religious per…[Read more]

Probably falling on deaf ears amid the Christmas celebrations, but there are only 7 days to go for the monthly comp, and so far only two entries. Fancy having a few hours writerly chill and having a go?

Probably be ridiculously busy tomorrow and the day after, so A Very Merry Christmas to all Denizens wherever you may be.

Aha, @daedalus, so you’re now a ‘renowned naval aviation author,’ I see. Fair play to yer, mate.

I was surprised to see that too! I donโt know whoโs been renowning me, I must say
-
Don’t knock it…
-
I’ll renown you any day @daedalus

Thanks both. Renowning accepted ๐

I realise Christmas is a hectic time of year, but I’m hoping some of you will find time to chill – and write a wee piece for the December comp. Only 11 days to go.

Should I write a bit more this afternoon or should I go and watch Star Wars 7 and 8 in preparation for going to see Star Wars The Rise of Starwalker next week???
