I wonder if there was a bit of modern extrapolation going on with the notion of destriers being really huge, based on the misconception of the weight of armour? I admit I thought they were vast until I looked into it. If it was thought that armoured knights needed to be winched onto their horses, it would need to be a seriously hefty horse

Just wondering – those who are members of JW, is there any way of seeing what the mini courses or workshops are before you book a ticket? Wanted to see if there was anything I hadn’t done before, but I think I have to say I’m going before I can look at the detail, which seems a bit barmy…
-
I have checked the site without logging in. You should be able to see it all. Click on Programme at top of page, then go down to the day you want to see and click on the + button next to, for example, the mini courses section of the timetable and it should show you all that is available.
-
That’s what I tried – but it just gave me broad info about mini courses, and I’m sure said I had to book a ticket before choosing. I’ll have another go though…

Thanks, Sandra 🙂 re destriers – apparently the modern shire/ cart/ draught horses are descended from them. Basically they bred some warhorses too big to have enough speed for battle and that’s where the latter great horses come from. I too was surprised to learn that a Medieval warhorse was usually only 15 – 16 hands high. (Apparently I also…[Read more]

Well done, Jules and thanks for the horse breed check list, correcting my belief that a destrier was a sort of fast carthorse. I’m a big fan of Dorothy Dunnett so this will be added to my list.

Thanks, everyone 🙂
I am just about halfway through writing the second book now so the encouragement is much appreciated.
@JaneShuff – that has to be one of the best TBRs 😀
@Bella – I thought I was being flippant when I spoke about lads marrying their mother-in-laws, but having checked, there were cases where families got split up and the…[Read more]

Brilliant! Loved the idea of ‘what horse’…and the 14th C sex manual. 😉
Looking forward to reading. Well done, Jules x

Excellent.
I do wonder how anyone can marry their mother-in-law accidentally or otherwise – rather puts the lie to all those joke, though.

Congratulations, Jules. Sounds like a brilliant book – I’m off to buy it now. And thanks for all the tongue in cheek info. Made me laugh as well as being interesting.

This is a fantastic book. A perfect weekend read. You’ll learn a heck of a lot about the Peasant’s Revolt but won’t realise until the end because you’ll have been so absorbed in the story

Well, congratulations and I hope the book does wonderfully well.

I’m just sidling onto the podium here to say that the first book in my Medieval historical fiction trilogy of novellas came out at the end of last week.
I think I probably completely forgot to mention that I signed a three book contract in January – so er oops! and sorry about that!
As background, I like to occassionally leave the fertile fields…[Read more]

I wouldn’t worry about agents etc. If you send a Word document then they will understand that it should be viewed in Word; it’s usually what they ask for. I think your problem is that either your browser or Google Docs or whatever gmail uses for previews isn’t displaying Times New Roman properly.
There are things you can try to fix it, such as…[Read more]

No problem Kate. No point my compiling a list and not giving others the benefit of it. And given my patchy record with subs I’m glad if anyone uses it. It needs a bit of updating, mind

A list of potential homes for speculative short fiction. This is a working list. I started it so I would have some structure to my subs but thought it might be helpful for others, so have started adding pubs even when they are not suitable for me or my work. Feel free to suggest additions or amendments

Are you using gmail’s webmail service?
I just had a quick try and noticed that when I clicked on a Word document, it was opened in Google Docs and not Word. My suspicion is that Word is fine but there’s something wrong with the way gmail is rendering Times New Roman. If that’s the case, then a fix depends on what browser you’re using and what…[Read more]

A question for fantasy writers – where do you submit your short stories/flash fiction to. I struggle to find places that take the sort of writing I like doing. Is it more practical to keep an eye out for submission calls on specific fantasy projects? Are there any sites I should be following for this? I’m finding the whole process very frustrating…[Read more]

Check out Dark Markets ( https://www.darkmarkets.com/?m=0 ) – mostly horror but there are fantasy and sci fi too. Also subscribe to the Short Stops Newsletter and thevAuthors Publish newsletter. Both send you regular emails featuring places to submit too – which includes a fair chunk of the fantasy market. Specific zines and antjologies – check…[Read more]

Indeed, I have a list though it’s already slightly out of date on account of a couple of the markets either closing or ceasing to do open calls. I’ll copy it into the main forum

I guess not. Google “troubleshooting font problems in word”, you should find this:
