So…I live in an East Midlands town. With a university, a canal, a market, wealthy hillside houses, poorer terraces town centre and large housing estates springing up on the outskirts. So if you need to run any specifics past anyone, let me know!
But…for a story of abduction and return, perhaps it doesn’t matter which of the settings you pick.…[Read more]

Thank you everyone. For the moment, the Doubt Demons have gone to sulk in a corner, so I’m going to use the opportunity to crack on with my WIP.

On the former Word Cloud forum, there was a monthly competition. This was not a prestigious affair, but it was a way of helping members improve their writing or just have a bit of fun. It was a genuine community affair as, initiated by a member with the delightful name ‘Wrathnar the Unreasonable’, the competition was set and judged by members. The…[Read more]

That seems short-sighted, to put it mildly! It’s good practice for any personnel in public-facing roles to have some kind of conflict resolution training, IMO. I’ve had a quick look online and found some courses (no idea how good they are, I’m afraid) that are as little as two hours and as inexpensive as £25 per person. You’re doing the right…[Read more]

Philippa: Something that makes setting interesting is its ability to surprise. I’m thinking of JK Rowling’s Casual Vacancy, set in a quaint and fairly well-off Cotswold town that in fact has a lot of socioeconomic problems hiding beneath the surface – poverty, drug abuse. That tension within the setting informs much of the conflict in the…[Read more]

Lincoln covers most of the things on the list, I think, plus students and being hilly.
What are the family like?

Hello everyone,
I wonder if you can help me with an element of my novel… SETTING (arg!!)
As part of the editing process, I am trying to develop a deeper sense of place in my story. The novel is set in a mid-sized East Midlands town, with various geographical features (such as a canal) which serve scenes in the story.
Beyond that, the town…[Read more]

Hi @alanr
I think this definitely sounds clearer and more focused, well done. You sound like you understand your own book, because you have described it clearly in para 1.
Couple of thoughts for the blurb bit (the bit we want to “zing”) – given that the book centres around the manananggal, I am curious to know how Galina becomes possessed……[Read more]

I can’t believe I’m writing this, but I have more good news to share. I have just been informed that my story, 32 Ivy Place, has won the Doris Gooderson Short Story Competition. They had this to say:
All the judges enjoyed reading your story and I have the pleasure of informing you that it has been judged to be one of the top three.

Mean and generous tied at 11 each so the outcome at the moment is generous by default. Anybody yet to vote who feels like being mean?
