  • The Future

“The future is the time we haven’t had yet,” he said, “simple as that.”
“That may be what the future is but not what it holds,” she responded, “not what’s in store, where it might take us.” Then she got up from the picnic table outside The Black Bull and walked off.

He thought about that last exchange…[Read more]

If anyone’s interested – States of Independence, at De Montfort Uni in Leicester on the 21st March. Free event: talks, stalls, publishers etc, and Benjamin Zephaniah is one of the speakers! Hoping to go and have a stall so I can sell some books…

Can someone remind me how to read comments that have been listed but don’t appear, please? Ta very muchly.

    • Do you mean missing comments on an update? 1) Click on the name of the initial poster to open their profile. 2) Select Activity from below their avatar/picture. You should be able to find the missing posts – not necessarily in a sensible order, but possible to work out what went where.

      • Even if it’s me that was the poster, Ath? I’ve got the notifications, but when I click on them to read, the original post isn’t showing more than one comment…

        • Even if it’s you who is the original poster. In other words, instead of logging on to the site and selecting Activity, go to the troublesome thread, select the profile of whoever started it, select Activity from their (or your) profile when it opens. Then scroll through the results below. If this doesn’t work then I’m not sure what to recommend.

  • How’s this for a weird coincidence? You may remember my story, “Lost and Found and Lost again”, involving a yoyo competition, that won a monthly comp late last year? Well, I slightly edited it, renamed it “the Yoyo” and entered it in the Reflex Fiction winter contest. It didn’t make the list, but another story did – it’s called “The Yoyo”. By…[Read more]

  • A belated “well done”, Jane!

Happy New Year to all the Denizens – sorry I’ve not been around much.

Hope 2020 brings you joy in all your writing xx

  • Well, I’ve read your entries with great enjoyment. Jeanette gave a beautiful allegorical rendition of the passing seasons, Athers made me laugh with his tale of Norman, the folium-phobiac hoist by his own petard, Sandra found a silver lining and Barney completely confounded me with this disturbing narrative – I’m still asking myself, what the h…[Read more]

  • OK, I realise there is other stuff going on to occupy you, so let’s keep this simple, and seasonal:
About 400 words on “Falling Leaves”
    Have fun!

  • Well, there’s a pleasant surprise for a Sunday morning! Thanks, Ath, and thank you fellow Denizens.
I’ll ponder a new prompt and put it up later today.

@janeshuff – I’ll try to find you. And yes, it all looks very different on NaNo from my first ever visit in June.

Fascinating tale, Philippa, well done for sticking it out to a triumphant end. Looking forward to reading the book.

I couldn’t do this idea justice. The right person could really build the tension and explore the changing relationships of the three characters as the story builds. Interesting project for someone, but not me.

I woke this morning with an idea for a short story/novella. It’s not something I’d tackle so I thought I’d put it out there for anyone looking for a new project:

Two women have taken on the challenge of rowing across the Atlantic for a charity – say, breast cancer awareness – and have acquired the necessary sponsorship, had a boat built and have…[Read more]

Thanks for sharing this, Philippa. What a journey!
And I would just like to add, for the record, that while Philippa was going through all this, and working (and crying) so hard, she has continued to be ever-generous in giving support and encouragement to others. Much appreciated.

Kudos for sticking with it all, Philippa – it sounds like it has really taken a toll over this year.

Looking forward very much to reading it – I am sure that it will be worth every bead of sweat, nibbled fingernail and tear shed.

And if it makes you feel better – Tilda’s just been published and even though we went through all the pages,…[Read more]

OK – sorry to ask again, but…
You know the captcha thing at login, where we say we’re not robots? I’ve logged in on 3 separate occasions today and when that page comes up, it’s counting down the number of attempts I can have, even though I’ve logged on successfully. Does this mean that we either have to stay logged in permanently to avoid the…[Read more]

    • I don’t know the answer, Squidge, but I had the same thing yesterday.

      • Glad it’s not just me – thought I must be doing something wrong!

    • I’ve had this, Squidge, including being locked out for 20 minutes. Chrome and other Google-based browsers will try to keep you logged in and synced across sessions and devices, but it doesn’t always work well – or in some cases at all.
The Captcha plugin isn’t playing nicely with our setup and Jules is looking at it. Unfortunately, the alternative…[Read more]

  • Lost and Found and Lost

Arthur was rooting through a drawer in the garage, the one reserved for plumbing parts, searching for a tap washer. His gnarled hands scrabbled through off-cuts of plastic water pipe, white nylon fittings, a flushing mechanism still in its packaging, old tobacco tins holding copper olives, bolts, nuts and split pins. No…[Read more]
