@ Admin: Is there some temporary hiccup with viewing recent Group comments? I responded to a comment in my SE group an hour or so ago, and Seagreen has replied twice; I can read what she says in the email notifying me, but all but one of the 7 posts are now unviewable.

Off Down Under for a few weeks – back back end of November. Lots of rooms, and a train, with lots of views. All writing longhand.

Yes, Thea – that ‘never apologise, never explain’ – I read, many years ago, that to do so was a sign of immaturity, but it’s one I haven’t always managed (not so much about my writing, I’m glad to say).

I realised that, when in the habit of being ready and willing to apologise, I was giving myself an excuses to fail.
Joining groups such as the Cloud, partaking in story challenges – stretching myself so as not to embarrass myself, judging my work against the very varied submissions of others, and trusting that my peers will give it the respect t…[Read more] -

I came across an article by Philip Hensher talking about a piece of attitude-changing advice he received as a schoolboy: ‘Don’t apologise, don’t denigrate something you’ve created.’
Some of the informal writing gatherings I’ve been to share the same attitude – having spent ten minutes writing a piece using given prompt word, those who say, when…[Read more]

Two bits of advice ‘freed’ me up wrt location, because I usually start with somewhere I know then make adjustments as necessary. Reading a disclaimer along the lines of “geographical liberties have been taken” I much appreciated.
Also, Eimear McBride said when she wrote of Camden, she did it from a 5 year old memory of the place and never…[Read more] -

“if it doesn’t advance the plot or reveal something about character, don’t prolong it.” – excellent advice! Thanks Jane.

For severe violence done well I’d look at Malcolm Mackay, Ray Banks, Stuart Neville’s ‘The Twelve’. Benjamin Myers ‘Turning Blue’ had me commenting ‘Stomach-churning details precisely told’, or Sarah Hilary. Denise Mina might be good, but I cannot remember which is the most violent.

In fairness, there’s not so much of a reference to WWI as there was in the tale from which this developed.

I’d agree with you Jane, ‘less is more’ works for violent scenes much as it does for sex scenes, though I suppose you’d have to work harder so as to bring something fresh for the readers’ mind to work on.
Those long, graphic scenes can be effective, up to a point but can tun as many off as they do on, so go with your gut feeling. -

Ah … hadn’t thought Halloween so much as WWI – thanks for reading and appreciating.

Depends on the weather … and the opportunities for writing time. Have a great time, anyways.

I had that once. Turned out I’d accidentally hit the spam button that hides posts.
Thanks. I’ve now compounded the error be deleting the thread. Hopefully all will return, but I’ll check the spam button.
I think there is a bug. When you post an “update” and people reply, replies are hidden after a while so that as much of the conversation as possible appears on screen as a block. There’s supposed to be a “show all comments” button, but this doesn’t always appear. The total next to the comment icon on the original post will show if replies are…[Read more]
