Wow, who would have guessed that no take-up would transform into four superb entries that I can’t fit a gnat’s wing between. I’ve read and re-read, and gone out for a walk – and here are my conclusions, before I change my mind:
Sandra – Catalyst
A gritty, rich voice taking us through a concise, gripping read and an unexpected but brilliantly…[Read more]

Rose the Cat
One day when I was seven, my sister Rose turned into a cat. I expected it because Rose had said ‘You won’t catch me here much longer. Not like this.’ Mr Cobden, the old man at the end of the road next to where the people had little walls all over their garden that my mum said were ‘common’, said to us that we would both live long…[Read more]

Transformation
It’s easy to transform. You just change, from one state to
Another. Nothing much to worry
About. Examples are (quite literally) everywhere you
Look. Consider the universe. Just
Took the universe a picosecond to drag itself
Out of an incomprehensible
Mess, shrugging on the laws of physics, sorting
Its chaotic nature into f…[Read more] -

last (24hr-ish) shout for the monthly comp (do we still want to keep this going in its current form?). Already we have two excellent entries, but one or two more would be lovely.

UNTITLED (as usual!)
89 words, so a bit on the short side, and I don’t mind if this makes no sense to anyone but me 🙂I saw the prompt and thought I would
Write a poem, if I could,
I took a vintage text (or two)
And tried to fashion something new,
Nothing worked till I caught sight
Of Sir Gawain and The Green Knight
And so my Transformation…[Read more] -

Fab review! Well done – she clearly really enjoyed it & picked up on all the things that I love about your writing! 🙂

What a brilliant review. I hope this generates some activity/interest/sales!
Incidentally, I see that Carol McKay wrote a pandemic novel that just beat the actual pandemic to publication, as did Kimmery Martin and Lawrence Wright. But they got splashed all over the papers and radio for it. Not a fair world.

OK, News on the problem regarding posts being set to “pending” rather than simply posted. It looks as though good advice, for the time being, is to avoid including internet links. All of the posts affected to date have had links in them and the (limited) online advice is that this is an issue. No doubt there is a fix -as this is not new – but the…[Read more]

Apologies to Denizens suffering from a bug in the forum whereby posts are marked as “awaiting moderation” rather than being posted straight away. It looks like a known bug and we are investigating the Wild Wild West of WordPress/BuddyPress/BBPress support suggestions.

Well – I replied but it has not posted. Hmmph. Will try again.
There’s a little red light vessel LV18 at Harwich. They did broadcast from it a bit, I think.

@daedalus there is a small, red lightship in Harwich. Lightvessel LV18.
They did a bit of broadcasting from there.
There’s a wiki on Radio Caroline which mentions ship and storm damage. Mi Amigo is the main one
I did link to it and the LV18 info but the site here seems not to like my posts so I am trying again without.
-
Thanks for that Bella – I had the faintest twitch of the lightship being involved but if I was right it would’ve been earlier.
My Radio Luxemburg memories are centered around a Bakelite radio the size of a microwave and winding a needle back and forth across a yellow chart, until I found it, but I was only allowed the radio in my bedroom when I was ill.

@bellam, perhaps you can help me. I remember as a child hearing about a pirate radio ship that had been caught in a storm and had to put into Harwich, when it was impounded. I was there with my Mum and she pointed it out to me. I just remember a small, red ship. This was in the mid 1980s. I can’t find any references to it. I know we still had…[Read more]

You brought back so many memories Richard. Begging for my own radio so I could listen to Radio Luxembourg at night. Was the Power Play a RL thing? Anyway thanks for the chance to remember my youth!

I was born a tad too late to really enjoy all of this, but your blog Brough back memories of a wonderful 3 day cruise we took in 2014 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Radio Caroline.
They had Johnnie Walker, Emperor Rosko and Dave Cash, Georgie Fame, The Rhythm Kings (we watched both their sets all 3 nights – it was a joy), Eddie…[Read more]

Your blog resonated with me in so many ways, Richard. I’m not quite the same generation as you, but I’m old enough to remember the rise of the pirate radio stations. I also remember listening under the bedclothes, not to a pirate station, but to Luxembourg. It wasn’t John peel that rocked my boat, but Tony Prince (my Prince and Ruler) who urged me…[Read more]

Thank you for the blog, Richard.
A school friend was a fan of Fairport and Denny. I enjoyed listening but not enough to keep up an interest after school. Was the house in Hampshire Headley ?Grange. Led Zep recorded there. I still listen to them occasionally but after I left school I switched to classical and have stayed there ever since.Tony…[Read more]
