I hate to post here twice in quick succession, but it turns out publishing has something of waiting for a bus about it. You may recall I posted a little while ago about having signed a deal for three historical novellas with Sharpe publishing. I thought the Den might like to know that the first of these, ‘Harpoon’, is now out…[Read more]

Can anyone remember who, or was it anyone on this site who wrote that rather chilling food based story in Whispers and Glances on the Cloud. I’ve come across this call for subs and it would be perfect. https://www.bloodgutsandstory.com/chew-on-this?fbclid=IwAR328nEPYjVhG9jgw2UriQMwHA4cge8TXwYDCt1wa_5uBuewb8yTmTFjWcg

I think that would be ‘Pied Bleu’, which was written by @bric
-
That was the one! Hopefully she’ll pick up on your tag of her.
-
Ooh – thanks Kate and Matt – I shall have a look at that!
-
Best of luck!

Daedalus replied to the topic FAQ: How to use the Lifeboat in the forum The Writers' Lifeboat 6 years, 11 months ago
Sorry to hear that @jeand – I can’t say I have a clue why it’s doing that but with luck one of the more tech savvy Denizens will be able to offer a solution
Btw if you want to create a new topic with this question, try going to the main ‘Lifeboat’ page https://www.denofwriters.com/forums/forum/den-of-writers/the-writers-lifeboat/ and scrolling to…[Read more]

Glad you’re enjoying it @Squidge I love the interlinking text – it really adds sometjing to the collection. I love the shared world aspect of the anthology too.

Some of the comments in our SE group have gone into hiding. Can anyone remember what the fix is for this? @athelstone? @jillybean?
-
There should be a little double speech box icon in the bottom right corner of the main post. If you hover over that it should give you the option to ‘view conversation’ and if you click on it should open up the entire chat. If someone has commented on a comment rather than on the main post, you may need to do the same on the comment. Occasionally…[Read more]

Fingers crossed the will reappear – same lack on phone & laptop, of both links and double speech boxes.
-
The other thing to consider is that if you repky to a comment, and the author of the comment deletes it, all the replies to that comment will be deleted to.
-
In this case, it’s a writing exercise, each of us posting for others to comment on. One seen and disappeared, the other never seen at all.
-
I’m afraid I have no immediately explanation but I’ll attempt to access it from the back end and see what can be done.

This was such a great project to be a part of (not least because I was basically asked to write war of the worlds fan fic 😉 ) Matt is being humble by the way. He’s written the opening novellette The Battle of the Alma, which sets the scene and tone for the entire anthology. It’s an excellent piece of fiction with stellar world building. (I keep…[Read more]

Thanks Squidge, Sea and Kaz! Just to say a bit more about this, Hell’s Empire is a linked anthology based around the premise of a demonic invasion of Victorian Britain at the end of the 19th century. I’d suggest ‘War of the Worlds’ but with demons in place of the aliens’ as an elevator pitch, but that wouldn’t really do it justice, as there’s a…[Read more]

Hi all. First of all apologies for the absence, but things have been rather busy with writing and the puppy. I want to take time to mention this, though, as it’s a publication featuring no fewer than four Denizens – @woolleybeans, @jillybean, @madiguana and your servant.

A unique anthology of two thr…[Read more]

Nice birthday present yesterday: the first in the latest round of rejections.
-
Happy Birthday!
-
Penblwydd hapus! But also, ugh.
-
-
I hope it was a happy birthday anyway. Sorry to hear about The Last House, but it’ll sell, trust me
-
Happy belated birthday @richardb! I read of someone (name escapes me) who used to collect rejections and aimed for a certain number each month, each one being an achievement and a measurement of activity and submission. So each one worthy of celebration. I’ve actually found that approach helpful myself, bizarre though it seems…

Child goes away with school til friday.
Me: Yay, long days to write.
Husband: *comes home early wanting to chat*
Me: …-
Husbands…
-
I KNOW!
-
Er, wives…
(ducks and runs for cover.)
-
No, hang on a minute. Why should I? Works both ways, dunnit?
-
Totally applicable to any family member. They should undergo training for being partnered with a writer. Step one, don’t come home early without prior warning!
-
Back in the days when I had a young family I used to do all my writing at dead of night when everyone else was in bed. I particularly remember one summer night when I got so carried away that dawn was breaking before I stopped.
I can’t do either anymore. Write in the small hours (brain turns to mush), or get carried away like that. Sigh…

I know, right?

-
Same here, I’m afraid: *I can’t concentrate so I’ve come to talk to you*
-
It’s an outrage! And then I have to pretend to be interested in what happened at some meeting! 😱
-
Mine just stomped out because I didn’t stop typing, which didn’t have anything to do with I want to get in with my WIP while interest is still being shown. No, it was ignorance.

I have to answer inane questions about what we need from the shops while my MC is hanging off a crumbling cliff waiting for me to find an escape…

I decided to copy/paste a scene from an earlier draft of my ever-in-progress novel. What I found was at least two nearly full drafts (in terms of wordcount) that I have little memory of writing.
-
I think that might be quite exciting WB! Maybe time to reread them.
-
Wowser – stick ’em together and you might have THE finished article!
-
I found a third one today. None of them are for the same plot.

Awesome!! It’ll be like stringing your favourite beads onto a chain…

This had a wonderful energy and so many great observations. I loved the quirkiness of phrases like ‘lean forward talker’ and laptop caresser’. I’m going to try and keep this style in mind next time I have to describe something. It was my bedtime read, and most enjoyable. Thanks Gerry.

Just spotted this on twitter yesterday. Deadline end of May, so I’m not sure I can rustle up something in time, but if you have anything folky and summery, then it’s free to enter and MIR seem to be a lovely bunch.

Because brilliant ideas might look like plot disasters in draft 2 but then turn out to be actually brilliant ideas in draft 3??
-
JaneShuff replied to the topic Unediting in the forum Blogs 6 years, 11 months ago
I suspect what I am currently writing is all going to be unedited later. Why is it so difficult to tell the difference between a brilliant idea and a plot disaster when writing a first draft!

For those that befriended Sally Hopgood on Jericho’s Townhouse – she is no more. Tried and found wanting.
-
Just as she was growing on me.
-
Oh, heavens! This means I have no friends 🙁

Just looked for you (on t’house) to remedy this – but no Seagreens were available…
-
I’m there as Jean Hunter, Gerry 🙂
-
Aha, found yer!

makes her sound like mould … 🙁

Have just sought out Sally Hopgood (on t’house) and found she is not good at hopping-it. Still there it appears…
-
Damn! I’ll have another go at offing her tomorrow. Thanks Gerry.
-
Hey, don’t go – now I know it’s you. Stick around – something might happen. Y’never know…

What happened was that the rigmarole of unrecognised password/user name has to be faced again … thanks but no thanks.
