Publishers vary a lot in terms of the extent they will consult and take account of author suggestions. Mine have ranged from asking me for examples of covers I like and making changes to the design at my behest, to not even showing me the cover until the book is published. In the middle was making some changes to a first iteration, showing a…[Read more]

It’s a great cover because it hints at characters and themes and atmosphere enough to give a sense of the book, without doing so too overtly

That’s not the worst Wordsworth Classics cover, sadly https://www.amazon.co.uk/Middlemarch-Wordsworth-Classics-George-Eliot/dp/1853262374/

Sorry Richard, I meant to pass this on to @athelstone and @jillybean when you mentioned it the other day. I’m pretty sure it’s a glitch, but could the mods elaborate?

Aaah, that makes sense! Yes, now you mention it I think I recall more attention on that aspect. I think it worked. Good on you, lovely to see your writing get more recognition

That’s interesting @raine, the story seemed pretty much exactly as I remembered it so I don’t suppose too much can have changed? Really glad to see my writing friends appearing in my favourite sources

I treated myself to the podcast this morning. Wonderful story, lovely to hear it being read. SH is a fantastic home for it, one of my very favourite mags

Often that is the case, but in this case the original version was fairly tight, and there was no real way to lose length other than salami slicing. Ah well

Oh no, @daedalus, we’re not going to be haunted by all the babies murdered, are we? 😀
Seriously, good luck with that. If anyone can, you can.-

Cutting a story down from 3800 to 2800… Got to 3200 and now every word removed feels like a fingernail

Keep going, Daeds. And good luck!

Thanks @libby! 209 to go

I started out at 900 words over, Daedalus, but persevered and think my cut down version is stronger. Funny how that can happen. Good luck with losing those final few hundred words.

All of you! Save those precious babes and enter them in the Monthy Comp!

They do have that sort of instant hit of relateable truth don’t they? Ironic, or perhaps not, that Roche’s career might apply to the principle of ‘Connections’, even though it’s clearly about something much more personal. A missed connection here or there is the difference between national treasure status and obscurity.
Also interesting for me to…[Read more]

@sandradavies thanks, I will look that up. I’m a fan of keeping speech tags/descriptions to a minimum and I often write scenes with dialogue first and then build the other stuff around it, so this is very much up my street

I am very much of the view that the Christmas season starts on 24 December and ends on 12th Night. It pains me no end that we’re supposed to start Christmas in about October and just go back to normal after Boxing Day, but then get back into the party mood for new year and then forget it all again. That’s the end of my curmudgeonliness for today

“I dreamt about you last night. No, don’t look like that.”
“Like what?”
“Like it’s a line or… like I’m being…?”
“What?”
“I dunno. Overly sentimental.”
“OK. I won’t then.…Well you can’t leave it hanging like that. What was I doing in this dream?”
“That’s the thing. I can’t actually remember. You know what dreams are like.”

Good to mix things up with the occasional bit of fire hydrant. But where’s the other street furniture? Why can’t we identify some litter bins for a change, or bike stands or something?

I sometimes think a robot would be better at identifying the traffic lights than I am. Hang on, maybe that’s the point…

Those blasted traffic lights. I’m always relieved to get the fire hydrants. I think I’m becoming a fire hydrant fan.

Dogs. I want to identify all the dalmatians in a field full of friesan cows.
-
I once saw a dalmatian in a field full of daisies.
Re street furniture, it could be the tables and chairs a coffee shop blocks the pavement with in a town near me.
