Sounds like you might be doing spider diagrams, Philippa – more poshly called mind mapping I think, but ‘mind mapping’ sounds too abstract for me. Anyhow, I find the technique very helpful. Completely agree with the two ‘touch points’. I need somewhere to head for – that itself is the basis of an idea. Also need to know the main theme before I…[Read more]

That’s really kind of you Daeds. I’m OK at the moment but there could well be something as I still do bits of research as I draft. I promise not to bombard you. My story deals with flying before and during WW2 but I admit I’ve kept naval aviation at arm’s length as something I don’t need to include, at least not in any detail.
You’ve already…[Read more]

Just seen this post…
I too am floundering about in the “half-idea” realms…. I think I usually need two sort of “touch points”: an inciting incident of some kind, but then another event of some kind to head towards in the narrative. At the moment, I sort of just have my inciting incident and not another “way point”. Grrr.
These days, I find…[Read more]

Don’t know if any of the YA/Children’s writers would be interested in this, but GEA North have extended their submission deadline until November 19th. For those who haven’t heard of it, the short blurb reads:
GEA North works with new writers, professional writers, published authors and MA postgrads – as well as writers who simply feel ‘stuck’…[Read more]

Coming back to a WIP after a year off. My writing tics are horrendous! On the plus side, the word count has now been slashed to something approaching acceptable, and there’s more to go.

Thanks Libby, that’s really nice of you. Glad you found it interesting and informative. I thought they struck the balance pretty well, and as you and Jane felt, did not overdo it with reconstructions. The little bits they did have (a snippet at the start of the Eugene Ely segment and some sailors running through corridors on a warship in the…[Read more]

I too really enjoyed this, Daeds. Thank you for sharing it. I’d never have found the programme otherwise, and it does cover some of the period of my WIP. The episode was really well paced and, as you say, didn’t talk down. I learned a lot and thought all the experts were well chosen – you most of all of course. I can find documentaries…[Read more]

Dammit. Just realised the core theme to the wip is not what I thought it was.
-
One day you’ll be glad of this. Better sooner than later.
-
I’ve also completely lost control of the days of the week. I think’s it’s just been both Tuesday and Friday simultaneously.
-
Sympathies, Raine. I had to spend the best part of a day retiming my plot because I got the days wrong and ended up with things happening on a Sunday when they couldn’t
-
I’m thinking of launching a campaign against the need for books to have to do days of the week at all.
-
Or to have any internal coherency whatsoever. Who cares if my MC left the house in trousers and was wearing a skirt by the time she got on the bus
-
I recall that Joseph Conrad had to make some rewrites to Under Western Eyes at a very late stage when someone realised that the entire plot took place over one extremely long day
-
@janeshuff there’s a possibility of that happening in my current wip – only more likely shorts -> trousers as the MC is a he.

@athelstone Hurrah. It’s time we writers broke free from the shackles of continuity.
-
@janeshuff this looks like another case where bbpress is hiding replies (for space and tidiness) but not providing a ‘show all replies’ button. So although I can see there were 8 replies, I can’t actually view them.

Neither can I!

Don’t change anything! Mr Sea is in Doha this weekend with instructions to visit the Museum of Islamic Art to take photos of their amazing collection of astrolabes. I don’t have any ideas yet, but I know an astrolabe will be involved.

I liked the prompts, Jonathan – their utter randomness and the idea. Stick with it. Nano will be a slow month, but we all might need a little breather mid month to keep ourselves sane!!

My inclination would be for you to leave as-is Jonathan. I’m sure you’ll get plenty of entries as and when. NaNo month is always a bit difficult for things like this, but I for one am keen to make sure I enter every Den comp

Sounds good. Plenty of things said and unsaid in there. Of course, now you’ve spent ages deciding on that, your editor will definitely want to change it again!!
