Pretty sure Stephen King now has a team of fact checkers. But yes I imagine the tone of those letters is gleeful. What I’ll say for King is that even though he’s writing speculative fiction, he portrays characters who’ve had life experiences he has not respectfully. The same cannot be said for Boyne! One of the big problems with The Boy in the…[Read more]

I keep meaning to read more Hemmingway. He has a deceptive way of conveying worlds of meaning in just a few words. And a lot of it seems to be subconsciously understood by the reader until they stop and think about it. I’m not sure he’d ever make my ‘favourite author’ list but he’s definotely a master of thr craft.
-
And a great supporter of adjectives and adverbs!
-
I’ve only ever read one book by Hemingway, and I don’t know why that is because that one book is a cracker – ‘The Old Man and the Sea.’ I know of no other book that conveys so much in such a simple tale, told in such simple language. It won him the Nobel Prize, and quite right too.

I read that, too, and came away dazzled. Strangely, that was the only one of his novels I read. I’ve read most of his short stories, and have them on my Kindle.
-
My copy of ‘The Old Man and the Sea’ is an old book club edition that used to belong to my parents and is nearly as old as I am. The story is brought to even more vivid life by drawings by two artists specially commissioned for that edition – a note at the front explains that they were supposed to be alternatives but were so good the publishers…[Read more]

Congratulations, Squidge. Do you have any posts or tweets you would like amplified? Must check in with Tilda and find out what happens next!
-
Thanks, Jules – there are a couple of posts up on the Scribbles https://squidgesscribbles.blogspot.com/ , one of which has a little video about why I chose a mining setting for this story. I’m not a Twitterer but any posts there by anyone else would be appreciated. I’ll try to set up a Q&A once folk have started to read the book – probably do that…[Read more]

Thanks! It so happens I got a contributor’s copy today, so I was able to mention it on the Podium. It’s good to be part of the community.

I second that approach to gardening, Squidge. It’s been a weird couple of months but I have got a lot of writing done. Loved the cover for the second Tilda book btw!
-
Thank you! I’m really interested to see what Bink give Tilda for the other books…there are bones in 3, dragons in 4 and I’m still working out number 5! 😉 All I do know is that the colour of the books will reflect the region where the action happens – so we’ve had red and green, still got yellow, purple and blue to come.

Well done, Raine. I managed a newsletter and 1000 words of current wip but a) I don’f have children so I did not have home schooling to contend with and b) every one of those words felt like I extracted them with pliers!

I like that idea, Raine. At present I’m still at work but if the libraries close then I’ll be at a loose end. And I definitely have books to write!

Liking the idea

I’m all for it. Currently on lockdown in France but finding it surprisingly difficult to concentrate on anything other than phoning friends. Would love a group to get me focussed on achieving a few things. Could we ban discussion of the virus though?

God yes please!!

Very glad you feel the same way. I need a bubble to escape into.

I won’t talk about anything that you lovely people won’t mention. But if I find one of my delightful companions who needs to talk about what’s afoot, then I’ll stick with then and slope off
-
Ath, just to be clear, I am not trying to stop anyone talking about it at all. God knows I seem to have spent the last two weeks discussing, panicking and worrying about it. I would just love to have a tiny bit of something somewhere which was free of it. Like a coronamo group. But only if everybody else feels the same. It won’t stop me wanting t…[Read more]

I agree with what you say, Raine. I should have clarified what I meant by problematic. For instance there are readers who boycott writers just on someone else’s sayso – I think you should always do your due dillifence and try to find out the whole story in as far as you can. Three independant sources of verification and I won’t boycott a book…[Read more]

This is something that I end up discussing a lot with my co-dragon on Dissecting Dragons. Ultimately, I think it’s fine to read and enjoy problematic art by problematic artists. The important thing is that you are questioning both within your own mind. I’ve boycotted certain YA authors because they’ve been involved in horrific online bullyimg…[Read more]

The good news is that it’s a randomly occurring issue which doesn’t just affect this site. The bad news is well the same. Still running a few plugin repairs but I’ll get back to you.
