  • Whodunnit? Idunnit. There’s a new challenge. Find your way to the new group called Whodunnit? to solve all your questions about how to fill those autumn and winter days.

  • Monthly comp:  there’s already three thoroughly inspirational entries this month … I’m heading for the Hull ferry later today, will be back on the 3rd September, hoping to see how others interpret this prompt.

Some years into my writing journey I began making a list of writers who, as I read them, immediately sent me  to my current wip, recognising the breed of magic, of tone,  I needed to add to mine. (no idea where that list has gone) I’m not at all analytical, so fail miserably at the ‘read like a writer’ exercises, but was mildly shocked, on r…[Read more]

  • Turning of the Wheel

In a yellow rectangle, in the black façade of a house, a woman is laying a table. Not the sort set for the serving of meat, but one that would see her more trussed and seared than any spit hog.

Candles set: North. South. East. West.
    Salt cast for purification.

Gaia had fasted for this night of the blood moon, its m…[Read more]

  • My, you have been doing your research, haven’t you?

I never for one moment thought you were attacking him.  I assumed that you were thinking what I think, that he’s an admirably level-headed bloke with both feet firmly on the ground. No regrets, move on, ‘that was then and this is now,’ to quote one of the songs. I would have said that he comes…[Read more]

  • Don’t get me wrong though, I’m not attacking him. I think it’s great that he doesn’t measure his success the way that some singer/songwriters do. And I do like his songs. He’s also a pretty accomplished guitarist. He seems to have been very successful indeed in other areas he’s chosen to work, pursuing a big career in Radio as a senior producer…[Read more]

  • I wouldn’t describe it as tiny, but neither is it very huge, and you do have to scroll down a way before you see it. So yes, not exactly a blaze of publicity.

To augment that line in Wikipedia, here are Pete Atkin’s own words on the subject: ‘I’ve never ever spent much time trying to figure out why the songs Clive and I wrote in the seventies –…[Read more]

In a yellow rectangle, in the black façade of a house, a woman is laying a table. Her movements are deft and economical…

    Wait.

    That’s not right.

For a start, that rectangle isn’t yellow; it’s liquid gold. Or maybe it’s a garden of primroses in spring. No. It’s even more than that. It’s mo…[Read more]

  • The clues to his, and their, lack of recognition are all there, I think. There’s some folk in it, some protest, a lot of the jolly sound of the 60s (cf the Beatles, Bonzo Dog Band, etc), but essentially it’s quiet, undemonstrative, intelligent music. Sometimes serious, sometimes funny, often both.  It’s the sort of music that you want to listen…[Read more]

  • Some afterthoughts.

After getting negative reactions to Atkin’s music in the past, up to and including on one occasion ‘Rubbish!’, I was a little hesitant posting this blog at all, so it’s particularly pleasing that it seems to have made at least two converts.

And now, the plug. If anyone wishes to put their hard-earned money where their…[Read more]

  • A lot of people seem to have missed out on Pete Atkin, Janette…

Details and links for the gigs can be found on the Smash Flops website. Just scroll down a bit.

Oh, by the way. Coming soon to a website near you: Whodunnit? A six-month(ish) challenge and opportunity for fun.

Ooh, that sounds like a brain stretcher 🙂 I look forward to hearing about it, Ath. I’ve never even considered writing a whodunnit.

  • How have I missed out on Pete Atkin? Been going to folk festivals for years, and just having heard snippets of him on Youtube, I thought I’d have had recommendations before now, if not seen him in person! I might have to look up some of the gigs you mentioned.

  • Wow, you mean I’ve turned somebody on to Pete Atkin? Result!

Yes, he is good live, preferably in an intimate setting. There are actually three gigs in very unusually quick succession lined up for next month – in the King’s Road, Ambleside and Middlesborough – plus one in October in Whitby. One 200 miles from me (and I’m reluctant to go back to…[Read more]

  • I have had a good listen. I have a feeling he’s somebody to hear live. Perhaps we’ll meet up at his next gig – if he has one.

I give up on books that boast complexity of prose above character or hook to read on, which makes me lean more towards plain text. However I am a sucker for a clever turn of phrase or a descriptive which reads like a painting.

I used to wonder if my plainer style showed a weakness, and would never read it out during workshops, after others with…[Read more]

  • I see you’ve been having a good listen…

Interestingly (or not) Messrs Atkin and James have each blamed themselves and excused the other for the lack of sales. After Clive James wrote in the fourth volume of his memoirs that the problem was that his lyrics were too cerebral, Pete Atkin wrote a long and thoughtful refutation (it’s here on the…[Read more]

    • Now I’m back home in South Wales, we’re probably not too far apart.

      • I’m in the Western Valleys, about halfway between Glynneath and Seven Sisters.

        • About 50 minutes from here, depending on the state of the roadworks around Merthyr. I’m in Gilwern, between Brynmawr and Abergavenny.
