Elle started the topic Setting The Place in the forum Blogs 7 years, 5 months ago
I went to workshop on Saturday about creating a sense of place in short stories and novels, which I found extremely useful as I don’t always think of setting as much as I should.
One thing that I wanted to share was an exercise we did that I thought some of you might found useful. Depending how you work you can do this at the planning stage or…[Read more]

Seagreen started the topic Golden Egg Academy (North) in the forum The Writers' Lifeboat 7 years, 5 months ago
Don’t know if any of the YA/Children’s writers would be interested in this, but GEA North have extended their submission deadline until November 19th. For those who haven’t heard of it, the short blurb reads:
GEA North works with new writers, professional writers, published authors and MA postgrads – as well as writers who simply feel ‘stuck’…[Read more]

Coming back to a WIP after a year off. My writing tics are horrendous! On the plus side, the word count has now been slashed to something approaching acceptable, and there’s more to go.

Thanks Libby, that’s really nice of you. Glad you found it interesting and informative. I thought they struck the balance pretty well, and as you and Jane felt, did not overdo it with reconstructions. The little bits they did have (a snippet at the start of the Eugene Ely segment and some sailors running through corridors on a warship in the…[Read more]

Thanks Jane, am blushing now! You’re very kind

Just finished watching this. Daeds – you’re a star. The depth of your knowledge and your passion shine through. Plus I thought the programme was a quality production. It told the story in an interesting and engaging fashion, simply enough for someone with no knowledge like me to follow but without talking down and without the endless repetitions…[Read more]

Elle replied to the topic Lilith (Flash fiction – 430 words) in the forum Critiques 7 years, 6 months ago
Thanks Philippa for your feedback and for catching that typo! I’m glad to know that it works and yes it is the typical ex’s issue but one with darker edge than the current girlfriend, hence the title “Lilith”.

Dammit. Just realised the core theme to the wip is not what I thought it was.
-
One day you’ll be glad of this. Better sooner than later.
-
I’ve also completely lost control of the days of the week. I think’s it’s just been both Tuesday and Friday simultaneously.
-
Sympathies, Raine. I had to spend the best part of a day retiming my plot because I got the days wrong and ended up with things happening on a Sunday when they couldn’t
-
I’m thinking of launching a campaign against the need for books to have to do days of the week at all.
-
Or to have any internal coherency whatsoever. Who cares if my MC left the house in trousers and was wearing a skirt by the time she got on the bus
-
I recall that Joseph Conrad had to make some rewrites to Under Western Eyes at a very late stage when someone realised that the entire plot took place over one extremely long day
-
@janeshuff there’s a possibility of that happening in my current wip – only more likely shorts -> trousers as the MC is a he.
-
-
-
-
@athelstone Hurrah. It’s time we writers broke free from the shackles of continuity.
-
@janeshuff this looks like another case where bbpress is hiding replies (for space and tidiness) but not providing a ‘show all replies’ button. So although I can see there were 8 replies, I can’t actually view them.
-
Neither can I!

Yes, that’s good. Intriguing, suggestive and evocative. Well done, that’s a relief! 🙂

So, returning to my WIP this morning, I saw that the last sentence I’d written yesterday was – I don’t care if this is a redam. – And nope, I don’t have a clue what I meant…

Thanks @elle and @philippaeast
I sent it off within two hours. I just had to tailor the letter a little. Interestingly, I’d already sent it to CB, but that didn’t seem to make any difference (I did ask).
I think this has sparked me into starting my 2nd novel. This one will be easy to categorise. I’m going for supernatural horror, with a rather…[Read more] -

Don’t change anything! Mr Sea is in Doha this weekend with instructions to visit the Museum of Islamic Art to take photos of their amazing collection of astrolabes. I don’t have any ideas yet, but I know an astrolabe will be involved.

I liked the prompts, Jonathan – their utter randomness and the idea. Stick with it. Nano will be a slow month, but we all might need a little breather mid month to keep ourselves sane!!

Daedalus replied to the topic Monthly competition – Nov 2018 in the forum Monthly Competition 7 years, 6 months ago
My inclination would be for you to leave as-is Jonathan. I’m sure you’ll get plenty of entries as and when. NaNo month is always a bit difficult for things like this, but I for one am keen to make sure I enter every Den comp

Raine replied to the topic Titles in the forum The Writers' Lifeboat 7 years, 6 months ago
Sounds good. Plenty of things said and unsaid in there. Of course, now you’ve spent ages deciding on that, your editor will definitely want to change it again!!
