The other day when I tried to submit a new topic in the forums I got ‘This topic is waiting for moderation.’ Either there’s been a change of policy (though I haven’t seen any notice of that) or it was a software glitch. The fact that, over a week later, the topic still hasn’t appeared, neither have I received any message about it, suggests to me…[Read more]

It is an excellent fox. Foxes are cool.
I think I understand really well why you wouldn’t want a human face on the cover. A huge part of the pleasure of reading a novel, is the way the characters reveal themselves to us as the story progresses. A picture of somebody, fully-formed, denies the reader that pleasure. But you can understand why…[Read more]

Now our winter comp is over – may I remind all of you wonderful story tellers that the monthly ones are still running, March already half-way through.
At present no contenders. -

I gushed all over this on social media and have only just seen it here – so congratulations on a thing of beauty (autocorrect tried to make that a ‘biting of beauty’, and perhaps I should have let it), which is quite perfect. xx

If anyone would like to read my HWA longlisted short story, it is now available in Sundial magazine at the below link. A Viking romp that I hope you will enjoy.

Congratulations, @katemachon . Sundial has done a super job with the layout and presentation. What a fabulous picture.
Well done.-
Thanks, Libby. I’m impressed with their attention to detail.

A Viking romp remembered and very much enjoyed again, and the picture beautifully matched.

Great storytelling Kate, and I didn’t know you lived in Jersey!
-
Thanks, Jane. Not a Jersey girl, but been here 30 years. Are you a Channel Islander? Not a Guernsey girl, I hope. 😀
-
No. I am in France just down the coast in Brittany but keep on planning to visit with a friend who lives in Normandy

@Daedalus, it was mainly making the manifests more fleshed out (so to speak) so they felt more real and the way they worked made more sense. So small tweaks throughout rather than a big edit. And totally justified, I think. I am prone to the vagueness, as you know!!

That’s interesting @raine, the story seemed pretty much exactly as I remembered it so I don’t suppose too much can have changed? Really glad to see my writing friends appearing in my favourite sources

Thank you @Daedalus. It’s a great mag & the editorial team were fantastic throughout. The acceptance followed on from a revise & resubmit, so it took a while but I’m delighted it’s out.

I’m mesmerised, at this time of year, by the sudden appearance of bright spring flowers, transforming seemingly barren ground to a show of life and colour. So this month’s competition is about TRANSFORMATION. Any kind – winter garden to spring; person from human to angel. Whatever your imagination comes up with, in 400 words.

Sorry Richard, I meant to pass this on to @athelstone and @jillybean when you mentioned it the other day. I’m pretty sure it’s a glitch, but could the mods elaborate?
Sorry, Richard, definitely a glitch although I have no idea why. I have no “list” or notification of anything waiting for approval, but as approving is something I can do, I’ve done it. Maybe Jules has some idea.
Help, @athelstone! I tried to edit it and the bloody thing’s vanished again! Argh!
Is it still AWOL? I just managed to read it. Fabulous blog by the way.
Yes, sure enough, it was back to “waiting approval”. Well, I approved it again. And I approve of it.
Thank you. Twice (or maybe thrice) over, that is.
I hope this isn’t a sign of things to come. While I was checking your blog’s status, I spotted two other posts for “approval”. One was from @libby and the other from @raine. Libby, apologies. The post has a date indicating that it was created yesterday, but the number suggests it’s much older. It’s your post on bookshops and the impact of covid.…[Read more]
No problem, @athelstone
I thought at the time that as I’d started a new thread, it was waiting for moderation. Then I sort of forgot about it. It was from last year when book wholesalers were hampered by Lockdown 1 and therefore bookshops couldn’t simply order stock in usual way.
As a postscript, ordering from the existing stock of a small…[Read more]
