Andrew Wille's DIY MA course 6 years, 5 months agoThinking about it, this psychology stuff is probably ‘inner worlds’ rather than the ‘outer worlds’ this unit was supposed to be focusing on. But imo the inner has to come first, right? So anyway, below are some rough notes from Stephanie Hutton’s Psychology of Character workshop (which, if you get the chance to go, is well worth doing). I’m no…[Read more]

Andrew Wille's DIY MA course 6 years, 5 months agoSorry for not contributing this session. I did the reading, and enjoyed it, and think I’ll use some of the exercises to expand on what I already do when I’m planning. I didn’t get around to doing anything for this bit as I’m at totally the wrong point in any of my wips for it to work, and needed to get something finished, etc, etc!
Too late to…[Read more]

Andrew Wille's DIY MA course 6 years, 5 months agoJust getting to this today & realised after reading this thread that I was reading the beginning of the chapter too! In my defence, it’s interesting!
I might try the exercises on my winter challenge story being as I’ve only got the vaguest idea about my characters in that… wish me luck!! -

Frosty here too. Cats reported cold paw complaints when I was still in bed!

One of our cats is a complete softie too. He recently spent a whole weekend lying with/on a very poorly wee girl who, whilst cuddling him, laughed for the first time in months.
-
Love my cat – until he decides he’s hungry at 4.30am. Or climbs into my lap while I’m knitting/writing/reading. Or brings in a bird. He’s very tolerant, too – Mr Squidge often plays Cataroo! (like Buckaroo but with a cat, not a donkey. And it’s me who gets the catty evils, as though it’s all my fault when cat moves and everything falls off.))

Andrew Wille's DIY MA course 6 years, 6 months agoYeah, timings are good for me too. As @kazg says – enough time that I can fit it in without feeling like it’s taking away from other stuff.

I’ve lost all your replies, but saw most of them I think before they vanished. THank-you for looking into it. It does just seem to be this particular group, which I would take personally, but the other group I set up doesn’t have this problem!!

Anyone (esp. @jillybean or @athelstone) able to tell me why the MA course posts are visible on the main wall to non-members even though the group is set to private? When I’m logged out I can see all the posts but can’t click on them to get into the group. Will making the group hidden make any difference?
-
They are visible to anyone who is part of the group on the main wall, I think. How are you accessing them? Activity – all members? Activity – my groups? I will check under admin but I think it’s just because you’re part if the group.
-
Yes, but if I’m logged out shouldn’t I just be like any other punter looking at the site? I tried logging out and clearing my browser cache and I can still see all the posts. I also grabbed Mrs Athelsone’s laptop and I can see the posts from that – and she isn’t a Denizen or anything.
-
@raine you could try making the group hidden. Members will still be able to read and post etc. No idea whether the issue is in WordPress, BBPress, or BuddyPress – the relationships are a bit of a nightmare.
-
Have made the group hidden. Will look into it further as I suspect this will not fix the issue. There is deginitely a problem but only with this specific group so far. Will see what I can do.
-
There’s definitely something odd here. If I log out and go to “Groups”, then the MA Course is visible but marked private and I can’t get into it – which is right. If I go to “Writers’ Forum” the MA Course forum is listed, but the only other forums there are the public ones. I can’t get into the MA Course forum this way as it tells me to log on,…[Read more]

Ah, events have overtaken me!

Bizarrely, even with the group hidden, the forum posts are still splashed on the Activity page

The good news is that it’s a randomly occurring issue which doesn’t just affect this site. The bad news is well the same. Still running a few plugin repairs but I’ll get back to you.

Andrew Wille's DIY MA course 6 years, 6 months agoAgreed, @Janeshuff and @hilary re the tiny details being evocative. I always struggle when someone is describing some room or building in perfect (perhaps even gorgeous!) detail. I’d rather just know one or two small, precise things that tell the story all on their own. So don’t tell me about every feature in some grand rococco drawing room, but…[Read more]

Andrew Wille's DIY MA course 6 years, 6 months agoInteresting how eclectic your I Remembers are, compared to some of the others – is that because you didn’t set yourself a starting point, or because you naturally skip between thoughts? Although looking at them again, there’s a strong family theme. I love the linking of first date, hugging your dad on your wedding day, and finding the house. And…[Read more]

Andrew Wille's DIY MA course 6 years, 6 months agoI love your gorgeousness!! And *stands up* I am Raine and I too am an overwriter! 😀
There are so many images you’ve got there that are stunning & the whole is profoundly evocative. I particularly like the ‘She needed another word for this sea, because sparkle or glitter or shimmer were not savage enough. They did not hurt.’ Because that is such…[Read more] -

Andrew Wille's DIY MA course 6 years, 6 months agoJust catching up with some of these posts. I love the peas, Squidge!! Ah, conversations with small children are so much more fun from the outside!!
The dream descriptions held a nice sense of disconnect, I think, and interesting that trying to deliberately write gorgeous felt so forced. Is it a sense that searching for additional descriptions is…[Read more]

Andrew Wille's DIY MA course 6 years, 6 months agoOh gosh, that would be interesting / traumatic!! It would be a really revealing exploration of memory though, and how much detail we still retain beneath the conscious ‘main’ memory. Much like hypnosis is supposed to draw out those deeper memories, i wonder whether this could do similar.

Andrew Wille's DIY MA course 6 years, 6 months agoYeah I write down snippets in my notebook as I hear them. Pretending to be staring thoughtfully into space. Child is horrified at me and says I am ‘Infringing people’s right to privacy’!

Andrew Wille's DIY MA course 6 years, 6 months agoOh my darling, that is so sad and beautiful, and I can almost see him in my mind’s eye. What a tender elegy, difficult to read, yes, but also utterly lovely.
I hope the eavesdropping and the time with the grandson have both been cheering. If nothing else, noting down the way small children talk is always a blast, I think. -

Andrew Wille's DIY MA course 6 years, 6 months agoAw @hilary that’s lovely! Sending you lots of hugs and tea!! I think the idea of being given prompts and free writing is such a liberating feeling, especially if other writing is proving a struggle. And being able to do so in a group makes the whole writing thing feel less lonely, I find. I know I have been really struggling with the urge to just…[Read more]
