Eight years ago I signed up for NaNoWriMo 2011 with plans to write a murder mystery (a genre I then knew little of).

I had a title. An idea: a cruise ship on which brides were bumped off to order. I had back stories for a dozen honeymooning couples; for ship’s crew and owners (some good, some bad). Best of all I had DI Luke Darbyshere and c…[Read more]

Saw this on FB, but deserves double congratulations. Well done.

  • Hey, Baz – REALLY good to see you – and yes, it has been too long!

  • Sandra posted an update 6 years, 11 months ago

July’s competition – I’ve given you the first eight words; you only need add 200 more. @libby has set the standard, but I’ve no doubt there’s more than 200 variations to be had. Deadline 31st.

Yup, I second Bella as that does have a sort of deadline. And ought to afford time for copious chocolate consumption.
(But you’ve omitted the monthly competition!!)

    • I’d agree, if something is time sensitive, do that first. Otherwise choose whichever is most likely to be finished or substantially completed in the time you have available so you can cross it off your list/see an end in sight for it.
And eat and drink whatever helps the process along!
      Good luck.

  • ā€˜Bringing a gun into a house
    changes it.’

The opening words lines of a poem entitled ā€˜The Gun’, written in 2001 by Vicki Feaver, whose work I discovered last year.

I’d like you to enlarge upon this by adding no more than 200 words.

And because I’m not convinced that two months makes participation any more likely, I’m setting a deadline of…[Read more]

  • Good heavens, Raine – what a compliment, especially in view of the strength of the rest; I certainly was torn between at least three to name as my favourite. Thank you, indeed. And you can most certainly read the rest, as soon as it’s done. (Currently ‘resting’ after finishing a first draft last week, and already knowing things need…[Read more]

  • Saw John’s news, but congratulations to Mad Iguana too – what an achievement for you both.

Just re-read them all – what a wonderfully promising selection of future novels.

  • Well done, Jules and thanks for the horse breed check list, correcting my belief that a destrier was a sort of fast carthorse. I’m a big fan of Dorothy Dunnett so this will be added to my list.

In this case, it’s a writing exercise, each of us posting for others to comment on. One seen and disappeared, the other never seen at all.

I’m afraid I have no immediately explanation but I’ll attempt to access it from the back end and see what can be done.

Fingers crossed the will reappear – same lack on phone & laptop, of both links and double speech boxes.

The other thing to consider is that if you repky to a comment, and the author of the comment deletes it, all the replies to that comment will be deleted to.

Me too – an astonishingly varied and well-worked collection.

    • Am just about to spend a week travelling round the UK visiting family (hello internet@sea) and am looking forward to reading them all!

Damn! I’ll have another go at offing her tomorrow. Thanks Gerry.

    • Hey, don’t go – now I know it’s you. Stick around – something might happen. Y’never know…

For those that befriended Sally Hopgood on Jericho’s Townhouse – she is no more. Tried and found wanting.

In general,Squidge, although I know exactly what you mean, I don’t. Partly because a lot of the time I am writing ‘badly’ to start with, so much needs to be improved (and the correct word substituted for the one I couldn’t remember – I’m grateful for Emma D’s suggestion of putting then in [ ] so as to later find.

At the moment, writing a…[Read more]
