Absolutely huge word count on these – publisher is basically requesting a novella. But you might find that works for you. Plus monster stories from a LGBTQAIP+ angle.
Here’s the link in case anyone is interested.

Thanks @katemachon and @raine.
I have no idea when the shortlist will be announced. I didn’t even know the longlist was out until I saw someone twitting about it! There are so many great and experienced writers on that list I’m really chuffed I made it that far.

Quote from Margaret Atwood – A story is a pattern broken.
Meaning that a story begins when the predictable/normal life of a character is disrupted. And a story is continued by re-breaking every new pattern that forms. I like this, it’s just another way of saying that plots rely on instability and changing/upping the stakes, but I like the image…[Read more] -

I do too. I’m really annoyed with myself for not entering the last one. I had an idea and half the words down but I ran out of time…

Oh, wow, Philippa! What a journey! And you are still standing – and your book is going to be in the world. It’s so brilliant to read all of this – the lows and the highs. Thank you so much for posting. And a great big huge Well done! You did it!

This month, for ideas, I’ve raided my list of phrases, prompts, things overheard and other bits’n’bobs where I save my writing notes. Let’s see what you can come up with around them in, say, 350 words.
The list is:
~~~
“If you’ll let me sleep”
“Fate has a horrible whisper”
“To all the people I’ve ghosted”
“Books resonate secrets”
“Kathm…[Read more]
Zoiks! Thanks John, and thanks for hosting and feeding back, and likewise to Libby and Daeds 🙂 I’m glad you liked my little writeup. I tried that site and thought it was going to make flattering comps as to my writing style but I think it has about 4 authors we supposedly write like. Anyway I’ll have a think about the Feb comp and get something up today.
Philippa, huge congratulations. I was riding the roller coaster with you. I know it was a long journey and a heck of a ride but to read it…not sure I could do it. Maybe thirty years ago.
I agree with you, writing can be damn terrifying. I often wonder why I put myself through it.
I wish you success and look forward to seeing your book on the…[Read more] -
I look forward to reading that a Denizen wins the comp!
It’s one of those Twitter things where I see loads of references to it but can’t find exactly what any of it means
It was a (very long) new Yorker article. I’m torn between a compulsive fascination and sheer rage.
I’ve found it… Cover me, I’m going in
Wow, American long-form journalism really is so very pointlessly longwinded. So far I have learned that Mallory is tall, good looking and charming.
Yes, but BECAUSE he is tall, good looking (he really isn’t) and charming, he GOT TO LEAVE CUPS OF PEE IN PEOPLE’S OFFICES and GOT PROMOTED!
Wow.
Still, tall and charming though, so in the world of publushing it evens out
It’s some raging privilege, for sure! But the author (must find her name, and books) who set a PI after him, and based her villains on him – she sounds epic. Classy sly burn.
