Someone on the current self-edit course has just posted this link about creating suspense and I thought I’d share it here: http://www.writersdigest.com/online-editor/6-secrets-to-creating-and-sustaining-suspense

Yeah, I tend to consider matters of formal structure far more in the edit than in the initial draft

Lots of interesting stuff here. I’ve never been much of a planner, and am inherently sceptical of the idea of story structure as something fixed and immutable for many of the reasons Libby raises. As structures go, however, I like this one more than most as it’s fixed to the inner life of the main character rather than something that risks being…[Read more]

I find this sort of structural analysis interesting – and useful because I’m convinced that there’s a kind of validity to it. So I’m really happy to steal the ideas and use them. What I’m not so sure of is whether something with a “universal” explanatory power – or even scope – is being described. And that goes for the stages of grief as well.…[Read more]

Market day in town so I’m off to see what treasures I can find at the book stall.
I’ve rediscovered the joy of real books now I’ve ditched my annoying Kindle.-
Nothing beats a good rummage through bookshops/book stalls, does it? But I confess I do love my kindle very, very muchly. 🙂
-
Nothing can beat the smell of books.

Magical, I agree, but then again Pebby’s pie shop in the village has a certain attraction, too.
-
OOOOOh! Pieeees! I am rather partial to a pork pie!

My problem is more with amazon than the kindle per se. I’m happy to read on an ipad, I just don’t want the intrusive presence of amazon.

Apologies to anybody receiving odd spam/phishing/troll messages at the moment. Hopefully an eviction is imminent.

I have to say I’m a little disappointed. The Den gets its first spammer and they didn’t even post a wacky blog about plastics or grass. Dull. Must try harder

Love London and her Shadow.

Most of them are good, but I particularly like ‘Two Cities and the Void’ and ‘London and her Shadow’

I like Raine’s suggestion of December. It would allow those doing NaNo to keep up a bit of momentum while not having to keep to such a ferocious pace, and is soon enough that folk not doing NaNo have something to look forward to. And it could be a good way of getting Room With A View entries done

The Banjo
The phone rings in the lost property office at Euston Station in London.
“Lost Property, Smith speaking, how may we help?”
He takes a sip from his tea, listens.
“Yes, sir, anything left on a train on this line ends up here. Assuming it’s turned in, like. What have you lost?
“So, a banjo is it sir? Well let me have a look, won’t be…[Read more] -

I completely understand, and I tend to have the same issue. For me, the fact that NaNo is only a month means I can feel a bit more comfortable turning down the quality filter. I do like to construct first drafts carefully (I don’t really know any other way) but that’s far from the main reason I don’t write much. For me, the main challenge is in…[Read more]
