Thank-you for the bum-kicks everyone! They were great, and it was idea of tea that did it in the end (surprise!). I have rewritten the scene. It’s not perfect, but it’s done. Phew.

My significant failure this year has been to have written nothing.
I am not sure that there is much I can learn from that failure, but I have discovered that the desire to write is not one of the flash-in-the pan obsessions to which I am prone. The desire is still there, and I have valid reasons for the mojo loss.
I am hitting the half-century…[Read more]

I suspect there might be a difference between US and UK practice as far as copyright goes. In the UK, copyright is presupposed so you don’t need to do anything to assert it. In the US it may be a bit less clear cut

Yes, it’s best to confront your failures. You can learn from them.
My significant failure this year has been to enter 4 novel award comps, and not get anywhere at all. Not even one Long list. The first was disappointing, then the others predictable.
At one of my agent 1-to-1s at York, I was told my opening lacked atmosphere, and maybe that also…[Read more]

@PhilippaEast That’s good to know. But I only recently took mine off, and fortunately before I sent my 50 pages off to agents.
When I started writing it, there was plenty of advice to include the “c”.Just out of interest, at FOW18 (Sunday) did you have the chestnut hair? At one talk I sat behind a lady with vivid hair of that colour, and…[Read more]

@Johnalty That’s what I thought.
@Raine My first reaction, too. Said author has since rubbished the idea. But otoh, every activity known to mankind has its share of cheats. -

Yes, there’s been previous discussions about this. Bottom line, no need to copyright (or to put that copyright “c” on any docs.)
Putting that “c” on looks naive at best, narcissistic at worst!

Can someone give me a kick up the bum to rewrite this chapter that needs fixing? I’ve got the dead, but run out of steam…
-
*got the ideas, I meant
-
Sending much steam, and also mild violence…
-
Gaaaargh

-
A purely figurative kick from me. Also would a cup of tea help replenish the steam?
-
Yes!!

I’ll put the kettle on 😉

Well, if you don’t write it. someone else will. And while they won’t do as good a job, theirs will nevertheless be the last word.
How’m I doing in the bum-kicking leaderboard? 😉
In seriousness: if you are struggling with just filling the space and doing it, why not have a play? Load the scene with symbolism. Pack out the scenery with things…[Read more]

An author’s work is automatically copyrighted as soon as it’s produced. Registering copyright is not necessary. All registration does is make legal pursuit of a plagiarist a little easier.

Gosh, no @alanr! That seems fairly ott and kind of paranoid. Plus a lot of hassle, right? Spending time and money to copyright something on the small chance that an agent will like it, and even smaller chance that they can be bothered stealing a promising idea rather than just requesting a full ms.
Who was the published author? I’m intrigued…[Read more]

There’s a tweet today by a published author saying a ‘budding author’ (unnamed) believes he/she should copyright a synopsis before sending it out.
Does anyone do this? -

Wowed by your generosity, Philippa! I’m sure you do/will get a lot out of it too. In case you missed my post on another thread, I recently completed a stunning course at Faber called ‘Who do you think they are?’ which was led by a psychotherapist. It was fascinating and very useful.
