I’ve been to every FoW and there have been many golden moments but none compare to sitting on That Stage with That Author. Glad we didn’t need tissues after all. You were perfect.

A great York festival (when I feared it might not be with all the changes at Jericho Towers) finished off with the best possible treat of seeing you assume your rightful place as keynote speaker, Mandy. The nerves didn’t show (much) xxx

I so wish I’d been there to hear you speak, Skylark. You may be tired of hearing it but you really do deserve your success. Not just for Home, which is a fantastic book, but for the years of contributions to everybody who knows you – the encouragement and the example and damn near 100% good nature and positivity.

@kazg Yes! I’ve found several aspects of the publishing industry quite daunting and such a relief to go to my agent and say ‘Help!’ and she’s brilliant every time!

@jd73 Enjoyed your comp entry. It reminded me of your namesake’s Struldbruggs (it isn’t you is it, Mr. Swift?) but damned by curiosity rather than fate. And an ending even bleaker than Swift imagined.

What a brilliant weekend that was! A week on and the post-York anti-climax has just about faded though I still feel like I’m catching up on sleep. No change there, then!
A friend asked me this week if doing the keynote on Sunday was more or less scary than the Telly Thing. Easy to answer as I don’t think anything will ever be as scary as the…[Read more]

@squidge great comp entry. Really enjoyed the play on decoration as a metaphor for life.

Hi Elle,
Much too late to be of any use but I thought I’d stop by and tell you I enjoyed reading it. With the suggested tweaks you have this nailed! -

All the colour disappeared from her world the day she moved in with him.
It’s minimalist, he told her. A blank canvas.
Surely, a blank canvas exists for the sole purpose of being filled, she wanted to say.
But didn’t, because it was all too new, too fresh, too…him. And more than anything else, she wanted him.
As time went on she still…[Read more]

@janeshuff – Terrible Minds is Chuck Wendig’s blog. Often off-the-wall, pretty sweary at times, but full of useful writing stuff. http://terribleminds.com

Great blog, Richard. While I didn’t get past the first few pages of Earthsea, I did discover a fondness for City of Illusions, and it may be that I need to explore The Dispossessed when I have some time to appreciate it.

Our moon is so much larger in relation to its planet than any other moon in the solar system that some astronomers believe that our Earth-Moon pairing should instead be considered a double planet. Imagine, if you will, a true double planet, with one planet only slightly smaller than the other.
This small difference has had a profound effect on…[Read more]

Yes definitely fine for everyone to post lists of blogs and/or books they found useful. I guess we can see what we get and if it starts to get clunky we can amend it to create master lists.

Possibly do the same for books? There’s a few I’ve found enormously helpful or inspirational.

Actually Jules, if you’re happy with people posting links to blogs they find useful as well as their own, like I just have, I’m fine with that rather than having a sidebar with a feed which someone will have to maintain. However a list of useful writing blogs in the lifeboat would be great.

UNTITLED (321 words)
I remember the first time we kissed. An unsatisfactory blending of my pickled onion Monster Munch and his chips and curry sauce. No tongues. We stayed in the shadows at the side of the house so my mum wouldn’t see us from the kitchen window. He wiped the drips from his nose on the sleeve of his Harrington jacket and tried t…[Read more]

I can look at a plugin to display certain blog rss feeds on the sidebar if you like?
Failing that there’s a lot of writing blogs I’ve found useful. I was going to post a list of them in the lifeboat 🙂

Hooray! Welcome, Emma
Hello! Couldn’t lose touch with all the lovely Cloudy friends.
And it wouldn’t be the same without our second lovely editrix 😉
Emma! Hi!
@woolleybeans Hi. So good to be here.
@squidge – Awww! Though I’m not the one who carries a WIP …
Cooee. Hi Emma. Good here innit. The spirit of the Cloud lives on.
